Featured Obituary:

A lifelong Chicagoan, Andy McKenna, 93, was a strong advocate for Catholic education and a leading contributor to many of the city’s transformational civic endeavors.

He had been Chairman, Bunzl Retail Services (formerly Schwarz Supply Source), Chairman Emeritus, McDonald’s Corporation, and Lead Director Ryan Specialty, among many other leadership roles.

McKenna was born in 1929 on the South Side of the city he grew to love, the grandson of a blacksmith and child of parents who valued education. He was a proud alumnus of Leo Catholic High School and the University of Notre Dame. After graduation from DePaul University Law school in 1954, McKenna joined the sales force of Schwarz Paper Company and rose quickly through the organization, becoming president within nine years, the first nonfamily member to serve in that capacity. In 1967, he purchased the company from its founder. In 2012, Schwarz, with 14 facilities throughout the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, was acquired by London-based Bunzl PLC.

McKenna had been a director on multiple corporate boards, including those of Aon Corp. and McDonald's. He was Chairman of the University of Notre Dame's Board of Trustees from 1992 to 2000 and was Vice Chairman for six years prior to that. He served on many civic, community, and philanthropic boards, including Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry and the Economic Club of Chicago, both of which he chaired. He was also chairman of the Commercial Club of Chicago and a member of that organization’s Civic Committee.

“Andy McKenna was a mentor to generations of Chicago’s business and civic leaders and my best friend for the last fifty years,” said Patrick G. Ryan, founder and retired CEO of AON Corporation and Founder, Chair and CEO of Ryan Specialty. “He is irreplaceable in so many ways. My wife Shirley and I will miss him deeply and our hearts go out to his exceptional family.”

McKenna was very committed to his alma mater, the University of Notre Dame, and contributed generously to campus initiatives, including a leadership gift for the McKenna Center for Human Development and Global Business.

“Andy McKenna was a tremendously successful businessman and an extraordinary civic leader”, said Fr. John Jenkins, C.S.C., President of the University of Notre Dame. “At Notre Dame, he was a revered Board chair, and for me, a mentor and a treasured friend.”

He was also a director of Chicago Bears Football Club, Inc. He chaired the Chicago White Sox baseball club from 1975-1981 and also served as Chairman of the Board of the Chicago Cubs, from 1981-1984. He is the only person to have chaired both teams.

McKenna held volunteer leadership positions over the years on many civic, community and philanthropic boards. He was a past chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Museum of Science and Industry and continued to serve as a trustee.

He was a director of Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, the Big Shoulders Fund, The Ireland Economic Advisory Board, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, and the United Way of Metropolitan Chicago, among others.

In addition, he was the Founding Chairman of Chicago Metropolis 2020. His former corporate directorships included: AON Corporation (1970-2012); First Chicago NBD (1991-1999), Dean Foods (1982-2000), Tribune Company (1982-2002), Click Commerce (2000-2006) and Skyline Corporation (1971 – 2014).

McKenna had an abiding commitment to education, entrepreneurship and youth development. McKenna mentored generations of Chicago business and community leaders.

“Andy will be missed by all of Chicago. I learned so much from him”, said John W. Rogers, Jr., Founder and Chairman of Ariel Investments. “He cared about those who were less fortunate and stood up for what he believed in every day, including diversity and inclusion in the board room. He truly was the best of the best.”

“Education is more than just a process of learning,” McKenna said. “It's a process of development. It is a broadening experience that helps you develop character.”
