Featured Obituary:
Julia Eshkonian, 96, passed away on September 2, 2020 in Highland Park, Illinois. It was July 11th during the midst of the roaring twenties that Julia was born into her awaiting family: parents Krikor and Mariam, a brother John. A year later Julia became a big sister to the final member of the family, Takouye.
Julia spent much of her youth and young adulthood in Chicago when the Eshkonian family lived on Flournoy Street during that time of her life. The street was lined with rental units as was theirs and each one seemed to have a different nationality as an occupant. The neighborhood was her first classroom as families frequently exchanged their customs, cuisine, and a bit of their language: lessons which were never ending. Julia’s formal education concluded in 1942 when she graduated form Flower Technical High School. She then worked at various jobs as a teen, but it was in her early twenties that she worked the most important job of her lifetime. She was one of many staff members of the University of Chicago who worked on the Manhattan project in August 1945 her contribution was acknowledged by the U.S. War Department, Army Service Forces Corps of Engineers. It is often recognized that the Atomic bomb was instrumental in hastening the end of WWII.
Three years later Eshkonian family moved to Berwyn, Illinois and that was the year Julia married Edward Tanielian. they made their home in Deerfield, Illinois where she would ultimately reside for sixty-eight years. As a housewife and mother of three, Julia did not work outside the home until her children were grown which was common then. Children no raised, life offered other opportunities for her and she found herself working as a legal secretary. Additionally, she served as an election judge for many years.
Julia’s father and grandfather were Deacons at the Armenian Church in West Pullman and Chicago so her love for the church is no surprise. It was at an early age she joined the Armenian Youth Federation and in 2011 was honored as Queen of the AYF Olympics. She was also a member of the Armenian Relief Society and volunteered much of her time between these two organizations when not rehearsing with the choir. The Armenian School enjoyed her as their first female principal and to the extent named their spelling bee after her.Read more from available from Kelley & Spalding Funeral Home »
