Glenview Man Charged With DUI In Crash That Killed Girlfriend

Rebecca Bordenaro, of Glenview, was a passenger in a car that struck a tree Sunday near the Museum of Science and Industry in Hyde Park.

CHICAGO — A Glenview man is accused of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol in a Sunday crash that killed his girlfriend. Ignacio Soriano-Saldivar, 29, was driving his 2015 Nissan Rogue northbound at around 8:30 p.m. on Lake Shore Drive near the Museum of Science and Industry in Hyde Park at 90 miles per hour when he lost control around a curve at 57th Street, swerved into the opposite lanes, jumped a curb and struck a tree, according to the Cook County State's Attorney Office.

Rebecca Bordenaro, 28, also of Glenview, a passenger in the vehicle, sustained multiple blunt force injuries and was pronounced dead at 9:35 p.m. Sunday at the University of Chicago Medical Center, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Soriano-Saldivar, who was not wearing a seat belt, was extricated through the driver’s side of the vehicle and was also transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he is being treated for a spinal injury. According to the Cook County State's Attorney Office, his blood alcohol content level was .14, which is double the legal limit. Soriano-Saldivar was also arrested for a DUI in 2014.

Conditions on Lake Shore Drive were reportedly wet, but it was not raining. Bordenaro, who was seated in the front passenger seat, was wearing a seat belt. According to the car data recorder, Soriano-Saldivar initially attempted to accelerate and did not apply the brakes until within 1.5 seconds of impacting the tree.

A judge ordered Soriano-Saldivar held on $50,000 bail. He is due in court on Aug. 24.
