Joliet Man Hit By Car Saturday Dies In Hospital

The Joliet man had left a Crest Hill bar shortly before he was hit by a car on Plainfield Road, police said.

A Joliet man hospitalized after he was hit by a car early Saturday died in the Intensive Care Unit Tuesday morning.

Daniel Smeets, 56, succumbed to his injuries in the Presence St. Joseph Medical Center ICU, according to Will County Coroner Patrick O’Neil’s office.

Smeets was hit by a car on Plainfield Road near Birch Street about 1 a.m. Saturday, according to the Crest Hill police. Witnesses said Smeets had been in the nearby bar Instant Replay not long before.

The driver of the car was tested for alcohol and there was no indication he was intoxicated, police said.

The coroner’s office will reportedly determine Smeets’ cause and manner of death after reviewing police and medical reports.
