JTHS Board of Education Recognizes Joliet Central Musicians
The JTHS Board of Education recognized Joliet Central musicians for achieving Division I Superior ratings in the IHSA Solo&Ensemble Contest
On March 19, 2019, the Joliet Township High School Board of Education recognized Joliet Central High School musicians for achieving Division I Superior ratings in the IHSA Solo & Ensemble Contest. Joliet Central band and choir had 16 IHSA solo and ensemble events with 27 student musicians that earned a Division I Superior Rating, two students that earned a perfect score, and one student that earned a Best of Day for his solo.
Joliet Central Band and Choir students participated in the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) solo and ensemble contest on March 2, 2019, in Hinsdale, Illinois. Each soloist and ensemble prepared a musical selection to perform in front of a judge.
Joliet Central Band director Don Stinson explained, “Judges rate each performance on eight different categories including tone quality, intonation, rhythm, technique, interpretation/musicianship, diction-bowing-articulation, performance factors and the performance (from memory) of numerous scales. Judges' ratings are calculated, and points are assigned to the performance in the eight categories. A maximum of 40 points is possible for what is deemed a ‘perfect’ performance, and a Division I or “Superior” rating requires 36-40 points. Solo and Ensemble contest requires students to prepare musical selections on their own or with a coach/private instructor. Many students go far outside of their comfort zone to study, prepare, and perform an individual or small group performance in front of a judge.”
