Lockport Man Shot Thursday In Joliet Now In Will County Jail

Joliet police say Deamontae Hunter, 20, is a known gang member who got shot Thursday near Broadway Street.

JOLIET, IL - On Thursday morning, Deamontae Hunter of Lockport got shot in Joliet during a drive-by shootout with another oncoming motorist. He spent the day being bandaged up and treated for his gunshot wounds at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center. On Friday, Hunter finds himself being locked up inside the Will County Adult Detention Facility in downtown Joliet. He's been charged with a felony crime of unlawful possession of a weapon by a known street gang member. He also had another outstanding Will County warrant out for his arrest, Joliet's Deputy Chief of Police Ed Gregory told Patch on Friday morning.

Hunter, 20, of the 200 block of Nobes Avenues, was shot around 11:30 a.m. Thursday in the 300 block of Joliet's Oneida Street, near Broadway Street. One of the bullets that was fired during the gun battle taking place during broad daylight penetrated the driver's side door of Hunter's car, striking him in his leg. Bleeding, he jumped out of his car and dropped his handgun, over in the 200 block of Broadway. Witnesses there called police and the Joliet Fire Department dispatched an ambulance to rush Hunter to the St. Joe's emergency room. Hunter's gun was recovered by Joliet police officers and taken into evidence.

At the moment, the person who shot Hunter isn't in custody. Police say it's quite common in gang shootings for victims to keep quiet and not reveal to detectives the identity of the shooter, even when they know the person's name.
