JOLIET, IL — The Illinois State Police were conducting a safety checkpoint for motorists on Saturday night in Joliet at the former Kmart property at Larkin Avenue and Jefferson Street.

By late evening, Patch readers were noticing the presence of several Illinois State Police troopers who were ordering motorists along the city's busiest intersection to pull over for questioning by the police.

The large police presence on St. Patrick's Day weekend aims to make sure that Saturday night motorists were not driving impaired around the streets of Joliet. Bob Hernandez, a community activist who was in the area to produce a Facebook Live video, later told Patch he saw a handful of vehicles being towed away from the scene at the Kmart parking lot.
