Lea Thompson, Andrew McCarthy to Headline John Hughes Celebration in June

The 4-day event honoring the late North Shore filmmaker's career will feature scene re-enactments and a tour of local film locations.

LAKE FOREST, IL — Last May, "Ferris Fest" celebrated the 30th anniversary of "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," the classic comedy written and directed by the late John Hughes, who lived much of his life in Northbrook and Lake Forest. The three-day event featured appearances by some of the movie's cast members, a tour of North Shore filming locations and re-creations of memorable scenes and sets, including a re-enactment of the famous "Danke Schoen" parade in downtown Chicago, which capped off the festivities.

This year, organizers are planning a new summer event that celebrates one of the North Shore's favorite sons, expanding the focus beyond a single film and highlighting Hughes' entire filmmaking career.

"The Shermer Club: A John Hughes Fest" will be a four-day event in June based at Lake Forest's John and Nancy Hughes Theater. Similar in some ways to last year's "Ferris Fest," the lineup of "The Shermer Club" will consist of cast Q&As, movie screenings, a bus tour of film locations and scene re-enactments. But instead of sticking with a single film, "The Shermer Club" also will spotlight Hughes' other iconic '80s films set in the Chicago area, such as "Sixteen Candles," "The Breakfast Club," "Pretty Pink" and others.

Lea Thompson, who starred in "Some Kind of Wonderful," and Andrew McCarthy, who played preppy Blaine in "Pretty in Pink," are two of the performers who are scheduled to make appearances. Like last year's "Ferris Fest," the finale for "The Shermer Club" will feature another ambitious, on-location re-enactment: Jake Ryan (Michael Schoeffling) meeting Samantha (Molly Ringwald) outside the church after her sister's wedding at end of "Sixteen Candles." The re-creation will be held at the Glencoe location used in the film, Glencoe Union Church.

Other highlights of the summer celebration include:

  • appearances by director Howard Deutch ("Pretty in Pink," "Some Kind of Wonderful"), as well as actors Ilan Mitchell-Smith (Wyatt in "Weird Science"), Craig Sheffer (Hardy in "Some Kind of Wonderful") and Cindy Pickett (Ferris' mom in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off")
  • an exhibit of memorabilia, props and promotional materials from Hughes’ films at the Northbrook Historical Society.
