Cubs Postseason History 101: McDonald’s founder Ray Kroc, a lifelong Cubs fan and Oak Park native, offered to buy the North Side team from then-owner Phil Wrigley in the early 1970s, according to Mental Floss. Wrigley told Kroc the team wasn’t for sale, which angered the burger mogul. So Kroc did what any rich businessman would do: He went out and bought another MLB team, the San Diego Padres, in 1974. Kroc died in 1984, the year the Padres came from two-games down in the NLCS to beat the Cubs and give San Diego its first-ever World Series appearance. The Padres ended up losing to the Detroit Tigers.
