Libertyville Bans Tobacco-Focused Stores From Downtown

New ordinance bars retailers whose primary business is tobacco or vaping products from opening in the downtown area.

LIBERTYVILLE, IL — Libertyville officials have adopted a new ordinance that bans retailers whose main business is selling tobacco, e‑cigarettes or other smoking supplies from opening in downtown Libertyville and nearby commercial areas.

The change to the village zoning code was approved last week and takes effect immediately. The changes, village officials say, aim to protect the historic character of the downtown and promote a compatible mix of uses, according to the Daily Herald.

Tobacco shops will still be allowed in other commercial districts, and sales of tobacco at gas stations and liquor stores can continue.

The ordinance comes as officials have seen increased interest in retailers focused on e‑cigarettes and related products, which prompted a review of local zoning regulations.
