FBI Uses Fingerprints And Video To ID Alleged Oak Park Bank Robber

Federal officials have taken Dane Phenegar, 28, into custody for a robbery at Community Bank at 1001 Lake Street in Oak Park on July 19.

OAK PARK, IL — The FBI has identified a suspect in a July robbery in Oak Park in which the man demanded money from a teller and threatened to use a gun. Charges have been brought up against Dane Phenegar, 28, in the robbery of Community Bank at 1001 Lake Street on July 19. Phenegar is currently on probation for an unrelated conviction.

During the July 19 robbery, the suspect entered Community Bank and demanded money from a teller. A complaint states that he then requested "no GPS or dye packs" before walking to the door. As the suspect approached the door, federal officials say he said something to the effect of, "These doors better not be locked or I'll start shooting." After an investigation, it was revealed that the man left with $2,874.

Officials later dusted for fingerprints at the teller window where the crime took place. The fingerprints they found there triggered a positive match with Phenegar in their database. When presented with photographs of possible suspects, the teller involved in the incident positively identified Phenegar. Phenegar was also positively identified by a witness who had encountered a man matching the robber's description in a parking garage near the bank before the robbery took place.

Upon viewing the surveillance footage, federal officials were able to observe a man who matched Phenegar's description taking the stairs up to the parking garage after the time of the robbery. Surveillance video also showed a man they believe is Phenegar removing a floppy hat and sunglasses (similar to those worn during the robbery) and tossing them into the trash.

Phenegar is currently in custody.
