Shot Fired After Man Breaks Into Elderly Woman's Home, Scuffles With Deputies: Cops

A deputy fired his gun at the intruder after responding to an early morning call from the 77-year-old homeowner.

BIG ROCK TOWNSHIP, IL — Kane County deputies scuffled with a home intruder early Wednesday after an elderly woman called to report that the man had broken into her home, police said. Deputies responded to a 3 a.m. 911 call from a 77-year-old woman who said someone had broken into her home and was still inside the residence. Two deputies who arrived at the home in the 49W500 block of Hinckley Road found that someone had broken in a rear door to the home.

As the deputies checked the interior of the home, the suspect, 32-year-old Marc A. Eberly of Hinckley confronted them and attempted to disarm one of the deputies, police said. A deputy fired a single shot in the direction of the suspect, according to police, who said no one was hurt.

Eberly was taken into custody at the Kane County Adult Justice Center on one count of residential burglary, two counts of attempting to disarm a peace officer and one count of criminal damage to property.
