5 Fake Calls Claim Daughter Shot Parents: Northbrook Police Blotter

Police said the original call to the department's suicide hotline was a "swatting" call.

NORTHBROOK, IL — The following information comes from the Northbrook Police Department and court records as a record of incidents reported to police and those arrested on criminal charges, which represent accusations by the state that are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed to be innocent unless found guilty in court beyond a reasonable doubt.

ARRESTS

DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE

  • Carlos H. Cajina Poveda, of Aurora, is accused of two counts of improper lane usage, improper use of turn signal, speeding, illegal transportation of alcohol, driving under the influence, DUI with a blood alcohol concentration level of .08 or more, and was arrested at 2:41 a.m. Dec. 30, at Willow and Landwehr roads. A court date of Feb. 7 was assigned.
  • Steven Agins, of Northbrook, is accused of failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, DUI, leaving the scene of an auto crash, and was arrested at 5:41 p.m. Dec. 30, at Dundee and Sander roads. Police had responded to an auto crash where one of the drivers reported slight injuries. Once they arrived, the driver indicated that someone had rear ended her and fled from the scene. She had recorded the interaction with the other driver as he fled, which revealed a license plate belonging to Steven Agins. The officers met with Agins at his residence. The victim of the accident was taken to a local hospital and released later in the day for minor injuries. A court date of Jan. 30 was assigned.

RETAIL THEFT

Maria L. Rodriguez Gonzalez, of Cicero, is accused of felony retail theft, and was arrested at 1:58 p.m. Dec. 30, in the 100 block of Skokie Boulevard. The loss prevention staff at the retail store said Gonzalez picked up items throughout the store and concealed them in her purse. Rodriguez Gonzalez also took a shirt for sale into a dressing room and switched the sale price to a lower amount before taking it to a register. After she paid for the falsely labeled shirt, the staff stopped Rodriguez Gonzalez at the exit doors. She had 16 additional items in her purse that she stole, totaling $462.75. She was charged with felony retail theft. The court date is set for Jan. 16.

INCIDENTS

ONLINE SCAM

An Evert Court resident reported at 9 a.m. Dec. 27, said he saw an ad on Facebook for a motorcycle for sale. He sent $1,000 via the online platform as a down payment. The seller requested the full amount be sent, and the complainant became suspicious. The complainant contacted the real Facebook account owner and realized the account had been hacked and it was a scam. The complainant contacted his bank to reverse the down payment.

IDENTITY THEFT

A Wilshire Lane resident called police at 12:46 p.m. Dec. 27, to report they had received a phone call in the spring of 2024. The unknown caller claimed the complainant had an outstanding bill from a cell carrier in the amount of $7,343.04. The complainant thought it was a scam and hung up. He recently received mail from the cell carrier's debt collection staff indicating he still owed money from an account that had been opened. The complainant had never signed up with the cell carrier and realized his information, including his social security number, was fraudulently used to open the account several months ago. The complainant is working with the cell carrier to clear his name.

SWATTING CALL

Northbrook police responded to a residence in the 4300 block of Forest View Drive on Dec. 28 and Dec. 29 for a report of shots fired. The emergency call came in through a third-party suicide hotline indicating the daughter of the house had shot her parents. Once the officers arrived, it was determined the original call to the hotline was a "swatting" call and everyone in the residence ok and was unaware of the call. A total of five fake calls were made to the hotline service. The officers are working with the family and hotline service to determine who made the fake calls.

PHONE SCAM

A Seton Road resident reported at 2:05 p.m. Dec. 30, she had received a text on her cell phone from an unknown number. The text indicated that someone had accessed her banking account to do an unauthorized purchase. She soon received a phone call from someone posing as a bank official. The person convinced her to provide her account info and password through the phone. The person later stole $8,000 out of the account. The complainant then realized this was a scam.

RETAIL THEFT

The loss prevention staff at a hardware store in the 1000 block of Willow Road reported at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 2, reported a male came in and grabbed a DeWalt miter saw valued at $499.99. The person put the item in a shopping cart and walked towards the exit without paying. The loss prevention tried to stop the male, but he just ignored them. He fled with the stolen item in a white Honda CR-V.
