Driver Abandons Car, Flees Cops On Foot: Northbrook Police Blotter

The officers had prior information that the vehicle had been involved in felonious acts in the St. Louis area.

NORTHBROOK, IL — The following information comes from the Northbrook Police Department and court records as a record of incidents reported to police and those arrested on criminal charges, which represent accusations by the state that are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed to be innocent unless found guilty in court beyond a reasonable doubt.

ARRESTS

TRAFFIC VIOLATIONS WARRANT

Sebastian Hernandez, of Chicago, had a warrant out of DuPage County for traffic violations, had new charges of having an expired registration, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, and was arrested at 8:16 a.m. Aug. 21, in the 900 block of Willow Road. He posted bond on the warrant and is due in court Sept. 15 on the Northbrook charges.

IDENTITY THEFT

Tomas F. Cacares Canales, of Chicago, is accused of identity theft, unlawful possession of credit cards, unlawful possession of a fraudulent ID, and was arrested at 6:20 p.m. Aug. 22, in the 1500 block of Lake Cook Road. According to police, Canales had been a passenger in a stolen vehicle, where the driver had fled police. Canales had been reportedly dropped off by the driver prior to his arrest.

  • The owner of a store in the 1500 block of Lake Cook Road reported at 6:21 p.m. Aug. 18, two people came into the store, walked around for a few minutes, bought items and left. The same subjects reentered the store moments later with two females. They walked up to unlocked display cases and stole the jewelry inside. The subjects then fled the store.
  • The staff at a retail store in the 1000 block of Willow Road reported at 5:27 p.m. Aug. 21, that four subjects entered the store to make a return on a gazebo, which was later found to be a fraudulent return. The subjects then took another gazebo without paying.
  • An employee of a store in the 100 block of Skokie Boulevard reported at 2:42 p.m. Aug. 23, that a male had come into the store and placed several pieces of merchandise into a shopping bag and left the store without paying. The subject was confronted outside the store, where he dropped the merchandise and fled the area in an unknown direction.

FRAUD

The managers of banks in the 3000 block of Dundee Road and 500 block of Skokie Boulevard reported at 6:47 p.m. Aug. 20, two females attempted to cash checks on accounts that were compromised at two branches. The subjects at each of the banks were wearing wigs and masks. When questioned, the subjects left the banks and fled the area in their vehicles.

FLEEING AND ELUDING

Police responded to the 1500 block of Lake Cook Road at 1:38 p.m. Aug. 22, where a 2023 gray Hyundai Santa Fe was seen. The officers had prior information that the vehicle had been involved in felonious acts in the St. Louis area. When the officers spotted the vehicle in a parking lot, they tried to stop and speak to the driver. The vehicle fled at a high rate of speed, disobeying stops signs and red lights. The driver stopped the vehicle in a Deerfield subdivision and fled on foot. The officers were unable to locate him.

FORGERY

  • An employee of a business in the 900 block of Willow Road called police at 10:49 a.m. Aug. 24, to report receiving a fraudulent online prescription for Oxycodone. The prescription was confirmed to be fraudulent and was not filled.
  • A citizen reported at 8:23 p.m. July 31 that a check he had deposited in the exterior mailbox in the 2000 block of Waukegan Road was intercepted and altered to a different payee and deposited. This investigation was transferred to the Postal Inspector.
