Drunken Driver Walks Away From Car Crash: Northbrook PD Blotter

The Northbrook resident is accused of five different crimes following the crash, according to police.

NORTHBROOK, IL — The following information comes from the Northbrook Police Department and court records as a record of incidents reported to police and those arrested on criminal charges, which represent accusations by the state that are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed to be innocent unless found guilty in court beyond a reasonable doubt.

ARRESTS

RETAIL THEFT

Khabibula Gaziev, of Buffalo Grove, is accused of retail theft, and was arrested at 7:26 p.m. Nov. 10, in the 100 block of Skokie Boulevard. According to the staff at the retail store, Gaziev reportedly walked into the store and grabbed two pairs of shoes. Gaziev placed the shoes into a paper bag and attempted to walk out without paying. The staff stopped her and waited until Northbrook Police arrived. A court date of Dec. 15 was assigned.

DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE

  • Dmytro Leibiuk, of Chicago, is accused of driving under the influence, improper overtaking off the roadway, and was arrested at 4:48 a.m. Nov. 11, in the 2500 block of Greenview Road. Police said Leibiuk was found asleep in the driver's seat of a parked on the parkway grass, up against a mailbox post. A court date of Nov. 30 was assigned.
  • Leslie J. Houk, of Northbrook, is accused of failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, leaving the scene of an accident, driving under the influence, having an expired registration, operation of an uninsured motor vehicle, and was arrested at 8:21 p.m. Nov. 12, at Skokie Boulevard and Henrici Drive. Police has responded to an auto crash and realized one of the drivers had walked away from the scene. They found Houk several blocks away, who reportedly denied being involved in the crash, even though one of the vehicles was registered to her name. Police said the victims of the crash positively identified Houk. A court date of Nov. 27 was assigned.

Luciano R. Ortiz Balleza, of Wheeling, is accused of having a suspended registration, no valid driver's license, operation of an uninsured motor vehicle, and was arrested at 8:43 p.m. Nov. 12, at Dundee Road and Skokie Boulevard. A court date of Nov. 27 was assigned.

INCIDENTS

THEFT

  • The staff at an appliance wholesale business in the 300 block of Melvin Drive reported at 1:36 p.m. Nov. 11, someone had paid for several appliances by using written checks. The business tried cashing the checks, only to learn the checks were stolen from another entity. The staff said the checks equaled to $40,000.
  • An employee of a business in the 1500 block of Lake Cook Road reported at 2:10 p.m. Nov. 12, someone at her workplace had stolen $3,800 from her purse when it was left in a common area for employees.

RETAIL THEFT

  • The staff at a retail store in the 1500 block of Lake Cook Road called police at 6:03 p.m. Nov. 10, to report a male and female came into the store and went over to the handbags for sale section. The male concealed a handbag in his jacket. Both walked out of the store without paying. The same subjects traveled to another retail store in the area and stole two items of clothing without paying.
  • The owner of a retail store in the 1500 block of Lake Cook road reported at 1:40 p.m. Nov. 14, that after completing and inventory of his stock, he was missing two boxes of perfume. He said the total loss was $17,000 of product. He couldn’t provide any offender information.
  • The loss prevention staff of a store in the 1400 block of Lake Cook Road called police at 5 p.m. Nov. 14, to report a male was seen walking around the men’s clothing for sale section. The subject grabbed a Moncler polo shirt and concealed it in his jacket pocket. The subject walked out of the store without paying for it.

THEFT FROM VEHICLE

A resident in the 1200 block of Williamsburg Drive reported at 1:06 p.m. Nov. 14, she had received noticed in the mail of unpaid toll violations. The complainant realized she had never committed those violations. The complainant then noticed that her front license plate was missing from her vehicle and someone was illegally using it to commit violations.

IDENTITY THEFT

An Avon Road resident reported at 11:03 a.m. Nov. 16, someone had accessed his airlines account and fraudulently booked a flight utilizing his points.
