Laptop, Ipad Stolen After Truck Window Smashed: Northbrook PD Blotter

The owner had left the items in the truck while they frequented a restaurant, according to police.

NORTHBROOK, IL — The following information comes from the Northbrook Police Department and court records as a record of incidents reported to police and those arrested on criminal charges, which represent accusations by the state that are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed to be innocent unless found guilty in court beyond a reasonable doubt.

ARRESTS

DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE

  • Rudy Garcia, of Elgin, had an active arrest warrant for driving under the influence, and was arrested at 3:17 a.m. March 1, after getting pulled over for having an expired license plate at Sanders and N. Mission Hills roads. Garcia was taken into custody, and the sheriff’s office of DuPage County was contacted about Garcia’s arrest.
  • Paul M. Catallo, of Glenview, is accused of DUI. DUI with a blood alcohol concentration level of .08 or more, improper lane usage, speeding (60 mph in a 40 mph zone), and was arrested at 11:59 p.m. March 5, at Dundee and Pfingsten roads. A court date of April 18 was assigned.

RETAIL THEFT

Cristi-ion Vilcu and Ionela Vilcu, of Rolling Meadows, are accused of retail theft, and were arrested at 1:36 p.m. March 1, in the 1500 block of Lake Cook Road. The arrests followed an investigation into an incident from Nov. 24, 2023, when the pair stole a shirt valued at $350 and fled in a gray minivan. A court date for both was assigned for March 21.

SUSPENDED/REVOKED DRIVER'S LICENSE

Sheri Smith, of Chicago, is accused of driving while license suspended, having a suspended registration, having a defective taillight, and was arrested at 8:31 p.m. March 6, at Revere Drive and Lake Cook Road. A court date of March 29 was assigned.

NO VALID DRIVER'S LICENSE

Maria C. Toaquiz, of Chicago, is accused of having no valid driver's license, an expired registration, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, and was arrested at 12:09 a.m. March 7, at Willow and Old Willow roads. A court date of April 5 was assigned.

INCIDENTS

THEFT/FORGERY

  • The staff at a business in the 3100 block of Commercial Avenue reported at 8:02 a.m. March 1, they had sent a check through the mail to one of their vendors in the amount of $5,476.22. The check was stolen at some point and cashed by someone that had altered the payee line. The vendor confirmed they never received the check.
  • A Waukegan Road business owner reported at 3:34 p.m. March 4, she had mailed a business check to one of her vendors in the amount of $9,056.79. She tracked the document and noticed it was never delivered. The document had stopped its travel at a mail distribution center. While checking the bank account, she noticed someone had stolen the check and altered the payee name. The check was cashed on the East Coast.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE TO VEHICLE

  • An employee of a business in the 500 block of Huehl Road called police at 12:15 p.m. March 1, to report someone had ripped the mirror off of his 2018 black Dodge while it was parked at his workplace.
  • A complainant reported at 1:58 p.m. March 3, they had parked their 2016 red Dodge Caravan in a restaurant parking lot in the 4100 block of Dundee Road. When he returned, he noticed someone had smashed the rear window of the vehicle.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE TO PROPERTY

  • A complainant reported at 10:39 a.m. March 6, someone had broken a window on the side of a church and bent a metal sign in half in the parking lot.
  • A resident in the 3000 block of Koepke Road reported at 5:17 p.m. March 6, someone threw an object through the front door glass to his residence.

BURGLARY TO VEHICLE

A person reported at 8:22 p.m. March 6, they had parked their 2019 GMC truck in a restaurant parking lot in the 4000 block of Lake Cook Road. When he returned, he noticed his driver's side window was smashed and his Apple laptop and IPad were stolen.

IDENTITY THEFT

A Heritage Oaks Drive resident called police at 12:48 p.m. March 7, to report he received an envelope in the mail, which contained an Illinois driver’s license. The license had all of her information on it, but the picture was of someone else. The envelope was plain and had no return address on it. The complainant never requested for a new driver’s license and felt someone had created a fake one.
