NORTHBROOK, IL — Following a number of deaths in recent years on local railroad tracks, the Northbrook and Metra police departments are partnering to "promote community safety" on Friday as part of Northbrook Railway Safety Day. Members of each department will be distributing safety information at the Northbrook Metra station, according to a social media post.

"Please take a moment to stop and say hi and familiarize yourself with the materials they are providing," Northbrook police said. "It is essential to stay informed and prepared for any emergency situations that may arise during your travels."

Police said the effort is to help "ensure the railway safety and well-being" of local residents. The Northbrook Metra station is located at 1401 Shermer Road.

Last year, Gov. JB Pritzker proclaimed Sept. 18 to Sept. 24, 2023, Rail Safety Week in Illinois, which marked the 10th year of the statewide awareness initiative, according to his office. The Illinois Commerce Commission and Operation Lifesaver, a national rail safety non-profit, conducted a week-long safety blitz across the state to share rail safety facts, tips, and resources to keep motorists and pedestrians safe around railroad tracks. Dates and details for a similar campaign this year have not yet been announced by Pritzker or the non-profits.
