Orland Township Hosts Sweetheart Scam Presentation
Orland Township Supervisor Paul O'Grady and Cook County Sherriff Thomas J. Dart recently hosted a fraud prevention event to raise awareness.

ORLAND PARK, IL — The Sweetheart Scam is a form of fraud that is specifically designed to take advantage of individuals who are seeking companionship. Essentially, the fraudster creates a fake online persona and uses it to develop a relationship with someone, usually an older person. Over time, the fraudster will start to ask for money, often for a medical emergency or other pressing need. Once the funds have been received, the fraudster disappears, leaving the victim heartbroken and financially devastated.
To help combat this problem, Orland Township Supervisor Paul O'Grady and Cook County Sherriff Thomas J. Dart recently hosted an event on Wednesday, February 7 to raise awareness about the Sweetheart Scam. The event was held at the Orland Township Activity Center and featured a presentation on how to identify and avoid falling victim to this type of fraud. According to Supervisor Paul O'Grady, the event was a great success and provided attendees with important information that they could use to protect themselves from scammers in the future.
"Everyone left the room feeling empowered and informed about how to recognize and prevent frauds, especially romance scams. The presentation was a resounding success, and attendees are now better equipped to safeguard themselves against potential threats," said Supervisor Paul O’Grady.
