Stirring Up Community Spirit: Orland Township's Souper Bowl Challenge

ORLAND PARK, IL — On Saturday, February 8, Orland Township Supervisor Paul O’Grady welcomed an enthusiastic crowd to the much-anticipated Souper Bowl Challenge. This delightful culinary event not only showcased a wide array of mouthwatering soups but also raised valuable funds for the Orland Township Scholarship Foundation, emphasizing the community’s commitment to educational support.

Attendees gathered at the Orland Township Administrative Building, where they were treated to an impressive selection of soups, each reflecting the creativity and passion of the contestants. Participants were categorized into distinct groups: the Rookies, showcasing budding culinary talents aged 12 to 54; the Senior Hall of Famers, honoring seasoned chefs aged 55 and older; the Public Service Pro Bowlers, featuring dedicated members from Emergency Services, Education, and Government sectors; and the Culinary MVPs, highlighting renowned restaurants and certified chefs.

“This event truly embodies the spirit of community and creativity,” remarked Supervisor Paul O’Grady, reflecting on the camaraderie displayed throughout the day. “It’s heartwarming to see both emerging chefs and experienced cooks unite to share their culinary skills and connect with residents of our township.”

Among the many talented participants, Lena Matariyeh earned recognition for Best Decorated, enchanting guests with her artistic presentation. Rock Bottom Culinary garnered the prestigious People’s Choice award, a testament to their outstanding flavor and creativity, as voted by the attendees.

The top Culinary MVPs were celebrated with awards bestowed in order of merit: Rock Bottom clinched first place, followed closely by North & Maple, with Miller's Ale House earning third. Honorable mentions were awarded to Kismet and Georgios, acknowledging their exceptional contributions to the event.

In the category of Public Service Pro Bowlers, Liz Credio from Orland Township and Marian Village were celebrated for their remarkable culinary offerings. For the Rookie/Senior Hall of Famers, Marie Ryan took the lead, followed by Lena Matariyeh and Mary Lu Wasniewski, showcasing a wonderful blend of experience and innovation.

The Souper Bowl Challenge was made possible thanks to the generous sponsorship of local favorites: Georgio’s Banquets, North & Maple Kitchen + Bar, Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery, and Escapology.
