E-Cig Causes Car Fire in Walmart Parking Lot

No injuries were reported during the blaze.

OSWEGO, IL — Oswego firefighters found two vehicles on fire when they were called to the Walmart parking lot at 2300 Rt. 34 Saturday.

Firefighters were called to the parking lot at 9 p.m. April 16. When they arrived, they found two vehicles on fire, a 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer and a Hyundai Sonata. The Trailblazer was engulfed in flames, while the Hyundai was heavily damaged from exposure to the original fire. Fires were under control within minutes, according to a press release from the Oswego Fire Protection District.

With information from the vehicle’s driver and Walmart security cameras, investigators found no ignition sources other than a vapor-type e-cigarette found in a cup holder in the center console of the Trailblazer.

No injuries were reported during the blaze. Damage to both vehicles and the parking lot was estimated to be in excess of $20,000.
