Bitcoins, Stand-Up, Vinyl Among MVCC New Fall Course Offerings

Moraine Valley's new fall noncredit class lineup features bitcoin, vinyl, comedy writing, and more.

PALOS HILLS, IL -- Fall registration is open now for non-credit classes at Moraine Valley Community College. New courses being offered this fall provide insight into bitcoins, modern vinyl resurgence trends, how annuities can supplement retirement income, or ways to writer and deliver jokes in stand-up routines.

These courses are just a sampling of the many new non-credit classes offered through Corporate, Community and Continuing Education at Moraine Valley, 9000 W. College Parkway, Palos Hills. Class-goers can hone career skills, plan more responsibly for retirement, learn a new hoopy, pursue a passion or increase their knowledge of a topic of interest.

Financial Strategies for Retirement: Those getting ready to leave the workforce can learn more about financial strategies and annuities. The class explains the potential healthcare costs in retirement, the best time to begin collecting Social Security, and required minimum distribution strategies. The three-week course is offered on Thursdays, Sept. 13, Sept. 20 ad Sept. 27 from 7 to 9 p.m. on the college’s main campus, Building M, Room M208. Course code is IM4-109-200. Cost is $36.

Annuity Basics: This class explains annuities and how they can provide supplemental income, and examines key features of immediate vs. deferred annuities vs. fixed vs. variable annuities. The course is offered Wednesday, Oct. 3, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Palos Hills campus, Building M, Room M208. Course code is IM4-111-200. The cost is $10.

Bitcoin and Block Chain Overview: Those in class will learn how bitcoin is used, if it’s legal tender, how to buy and mine bitcoin, and about bitcoin addresses and wallets. Students also will learn about what a block chain is and the possibilities of permission-less technology. The course is offered Thursday, Oct. 4, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., in Room 213 at MVCC Southwest Education Center, 17100 S. 94th Ave., Tinley Park. Course code is NT4-101-592. The course is also being offered Thursday, Oct. 4, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., at the main campus in Palos Hills, Building T, Room T002. Course code is NT4-101-200. Cost is $49 for each class.

Introduction To Stand-Up Comedy: In addition to writing jokes and learning skills to create a perofrmance at a showecase or open mic night, this class can help sutdnets improve public speaking skills and feel comfortable performing in front of an audience. The six-week class can help students improve pubic speaking skills and feel comfortable performing in front of an audience. The six-week class will be held on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon, Oct. 6 through Nove. 10, in Building T, Room T002. The course code is HB4-367-270. Cost is $125.

What’s My Vinyl Music Record Worth?: Vinyl is making a comeback and enrollees in the class are asked to bring in their vinyl LP records for assessment. There will also be discussion on record collection as a hobby with inside into modern vinyl resurgence trends. The class will be held Wednesday, Oct. 10, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Building T, Room T910. Course code is HB4-125-200. The cost is $20.
