Police Warn of Ruse Burglars In Palos Heights

Police believe same suspect is involved in two ruse burglaries targeting elderly residents in Palos Heights.

PALOS HEIGHTS, IL — A fake “water department” employee targeted elderly residents in two separate incidents earlier this week in what Palos Heights police say are consistent with ruse burglaries. While the homeowners were occupied with the utility worker, a second person entered the back of the house to steal money and other valuables.

The first incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. Jan. 26 in the 12000 block of 69th Avenue. Home security video showed a suspect entering a three-season room by tearing a screen door and checking the rear door for entry.

Later that afternoon, in the 7000 block of 125th Street, an elderly couple were met at the door by a man in a utility vest who identified himself as a water department employee. Police said the man told the couple that the water at St. Alexander’s Church was turned off. He entered the home to check the water pressure in the basement. Around the back of the house, police said a second man entered the house.

Police said the same suspect has been identified in both burglaries. There have been no known water issues in the area. Palos Heights police remind residents not to allow strangers in their homes. Residents are also advised to educate their vulnerable family members about these types of incidents to prevent them before they occur.
