Romeoville Hammer Man Back in Jail, Waiting on Trip to Prison

The retired accountant faced a murder charge for his wife's death but will do less than three years in prison.

A retired accountant from Romeoville once charged with murder for clubbing his wife in the head with a hammer is back in jail while he waits on a trip to prison.

But John Sadler, 72, will do less than three years after he is shipped off thanks to a deal he cut with prosecutors last month.

Sadler pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and concealing a homicide in connection with the July 2010 death of his 66-year-old wife, Carol Sadler.

The cops found Carol Sadler’s 10-day-old corpse wife inside the Benzie Circle home she shared with her husband. The law had gone to check on why she hadn’t been heard from in so long.

John Sadler reportedly admitted to hitting his wife in the head with a hammer. He was charged with murder and taken to the Will County jail. His bond was set at $3 million.

But Carol Sadler’s autopsy showed she actually died of a heart attack mere moments before her husband hit her in the head with a hammer. Since it was her heart — and not the hammer — that technically killed her, prosecutors reduced the charges and dropped John Sadler’s bond to $300,000. He promptly bailed out of jail and was free from October 2010 until he was sentenced last week.

John Sadler had shot down an earlier deal offered by prosecutors, much to the chagrin of his daughter. The anguished woman shouted to her father from the gallery, imploring, “Take the deal, dad! My God, take the deal!”
