Cold Feet: Man Takes Suicide Leap From Cass St. Bridge, Changes Mind and Swims For Shore

The man was able to pull himself out of the water by grabbing rebar jutting from the shore.

A man jumped off the Cass Street bridge Tuesday morning in a bid to kill himself but got cold feet after he hit the water.

The man, whom police said was in his 40s, was able to swim to the river bank and pull himself out of the water by grabbing onto rebar jutting from the shore.

The man parked his car on the Cass Street bridge about 9:15 a.m., climbed up the structure and plunged down into the water.

Police officers were able to track the man down and he reportedly told them he intended to commit suicide but when he splashed into the river decided that was actually a “bad idea.”

The man was taken to Presence St. Joseph Medical Center and involuntarily committed for psychiatric evaluation.
