From the "Hecho en Illinois" storytelling evening to a Hispanic Heritage Festival, Lotería and Taco Nite, and a Day of the Dead observance, the series highlights Latine culture, food, and traditions close to home.

'A dire situation': D186's fund balance shrinks as deficit budget looms (sj-r.com) — Springfield District 186 is facing a projected $7.93 million deficit in its proposed FY27 budget, forcing deep cuts and a major drawdown of its fund balance below board policy levels. Leaders warn the situation is "dire" as larger class sizes, staff reassignments, and state oversight risks loom while they craft a deficit reduction plan for future years.
   

4. Memorial Health Championship presented by LRS Announces 2027 Tournament Dates (springfieldherald.news) — Springfield will again host the Memorial Health Championship June 14–20, 2027, marking the Korn Ferry Tour event's 12th year and bringing thousands of visitors to town. Organizers say the tournament generates about $7.5 million in economic impact while supporting local health initiatives, with more details on volunteers, activities, and hospitality to come soon.
   

5. Crime Stoppers seeking tips on Springfield wallet theft (wcia.com) — Springfield Police and Sangamon/Menard County Crime Stoppers are asking for tips after a wallet was stolen around midnight Aug. 29 at Main Gate Bar and Grill on North 11th Street. A woman with dark hair, seen on surveillance picking up the wallet, could earn a tipster up to $2,500 in cash if information leads to an arrest.
