Skinned Coyote Carcasses Found at Kane Co. Forest Preserve

Four skinned carcasses were found by a walker at Fox River Bluff East Forest Preserve in St. Charles over the weekend.

The Kane County Forest Preserve District is keeping a closer eye on its sites after four coyote carcasses were dumped along a trail at a St. Charles forest preserve on Saturday.

Forest preserve district police believe someone trapped and skinned the coyotes before leaving them at the Fox River Bluff East Forest Preserve, which is located along Weber Road north of Pearson Drive, said Michael Gilloffo, chief of police for the forest preserve district. Someone walking along a trail near the parking lots of the forest preserve saw the coyote bodies around 1 p.m. on Saturday and called authorities.

Although not permitted in the forest preserves, Gilloffo said open hunting is allowed year-round on coyotes. People will trap the coyotes because they are nuisance or because they want to sell their fur.

It is illegal to dump carcasses, or any waste items, at forest preserve sites, Gilloffo said. Staff has to clean up those messes, he said.

Gilloffo said staff will be keeping a close eye on forest preserve sites and if any similar reports are made, district officials will look at putting cameras up at the site.
