The Marion E. Wade Center at Wheaton College invites you to join us at the Homecoming Weekend Wade Center Open House on Saturday, October 3, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
Join us at the Wade Center for an open house during Homecoming Weekend. Explore treasures in the Clyde S. Kilby Reading Room related to C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Dorothy L. Sayers, G.K. Chesterton, George MacDonald, Owen Barfield, and Charles Williams, browse our museum and bookshop, and stroll through Aslan's garden!
This event is free and open to the public and will take place at the Marion E. Wade Center, located at 351 East Lincoln Avenue in Wheaton on the northwest corner of campus at the intersection of Washington Street and Lincoln Avenue. The Marion E. Wade Center at Wheaton College presents "Bookending C.S. Lewis: On F.P. Wilson, his Oxford Tutor, and J.A.W. Bennett, his Cambridge Successor," a lecture by Rev. Dr. Joel D. Heck, on Thursday, August 20, 2026, at 7:00 PM.
This presentation surveys the life and influence of two people whose lives intersected in significant ways with C.S. Lewis, both at Oxford and at Cambridge. Wilson, Lewis's tutor, was the General Editor of the Oxford History of English Literature for which Lewis wrote the volume on the sixteenth century, and Bennett succeeded Lewis at Cambridge as the man who held the Chair of Medieval and Renaissance English. Bennett's inaugural lecture gave tribute to Lewis.
Since July 1, 2022, Rev. Dr. Joel D. Heck is retired from pastoral ministry after fifty years in ministry. He has been pastor of Zion Lutheran Church, Valley Park, Missouri; Professor at Concordia University Wisconsin; Chief Academic Officer and Professor at Concordia University Texas; and most recently as President of Concordia Lutheran Seminary, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He holds the Doctor of Theology from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. He is the author of more than 120 articles, more than forty of them on C. S. Lewis, and the author or editor of sixteen books, most recently&nbsp;No Ordinary People: Twenty-One Friendships of C. S. Lewis&nbsp;(Winged Lion Press, 2021) and&nbsp;The Lion That Roared&nbsp;(Lulu.com, 2023), a children’s story that he co-authored with his daughter Brenda, who lives in Cincinnati. Besides their daughter Brenda, he and his wife Cheryl have two grown sons and four grandchildren.
This event is free and open to the public and will take place in Marion E. Wade Center, Room 130 Bakke Auditorium, located at 351 East Lincoln Avenue in Wheaton on the Northwest corner of campus at the intersection of Washington Street and Lincoln Avenue. After the initial welcome, guests will walk through the Billy Graham Museum, which will be divided by global regions, to interact with the scholars. Brief comments by College administration with refreshments will follow. This event is free and open to the public. There is no RSVP or registration required.

St. Sophia's Forgotten Felines

he cats we care for at St. Sophia’s come from many different places. The majority of the cats we help are those that are helpless, who have not experienced love or a home, stray, abused, and neglected cats. Primarily we work with high-volume/high-kill animal controls to save cats from needless euthanasia. Our largest partner is Chicago Animal Care and Control. Other ACs we partner with are Aurora, Joliet Township, DuPage, Herrin, Marion, Quincy, Tilton, Union, Jasper, and Whiting. St. Sophia’s also works with local Trap-Neuter-Return organizations. Trap-Neuter-Return (also known as TNR) is a method of humanely trapping unaltered feral cats, neutering them, and releasing them back to the same environment where they were originally found. TNR is promoted by proponents as a humane and more effective alternative for managing and reducing feral cat populations (compared to euthanasia). While most cats trapped are completely feral (wild, without any domestic socialization), some cats—often kittens, or even adults that have been well cared-for outdoors—can, and have, become socialized and adoptable. TNR organizations aren’t equipped to handle the “friendlies” that come in, so we step in to assist those cats looking for homes. Lastly, some of our cats are direct owner surrenders. Sometimes circumstances have it that people are unable to care for their cats due to moving, eviction, financial issues, death, allergies, etc. We accept these cats in when we have space and maintain a waiting list of those who need assistance.
