Event To Celebrate End Of Streetscape Work In Wheaton

The Downtown Streetscape Project Celebration will feature a ribbon cutting, live music, juggling, face painting and more.

WHEATON, IL — A juggler, a face painter, a stilt walker and live DJ music will energize downtown Wheaton for the Downtown Streetscape Project Celebration. The event, slated for May 20, will celebrate the city wrapping up its ongoing streetscape project and also fete the debut of the Wheaton French Market in its new location.

Wheaton officially kicked off its $35 million streetscape project in 2018. The multi-year project has revamped the city's Main Street with newly planted trees, widened sidewalks, sustainable lighting, bike racks and other amenities.

The centerpiece of the project is the new Martin Memorial Plaza, which has been relocated and spruced up with a new fountain and an outdoor fireplace. A new pavilion nearby will house the Wheaton French Market, which kicked off its 2023 season April 8.

“This project has been in the works for more than a decade, and it took a tremendous amount of planning and coordination to complete a project of this scope – especially with the arrival of the pandemic,” Assistant City Manager and streetscape project manager John Duguay said in a statement.

Duguay added, "While we worked to mitigate disruptions to local businesses and traffic as much as possible, we appreciate the cooperation and flexibility of our downtown businesses and our community throughout this process."
