Accused University of Chicago Stabber Nabbed in Texas

Ross Jacobs of Wilmette stabbed his sleeping roommate and bit off part of his ear, police said. Now he's charged with attempted murder.

A Wilmette man who police say stabbed his roommate at the University of Chicago as the man was sleeping, then bit off part of his ear, was caught this week in Texas.

Ross Jacobs, 27, was booked into the Dallas County Jail on a charge of attempted murder after being caught using an ATM in Dallas, ABC-7-Chicago reports.

It’s not clear what precipitated the attack, which allegedly occurred around 3 a.m. Friday at an apartment near the University of Chicago campus in Hyde Park.

But a neighbor told ABC she was “always on alert” when she would see Jacobs.

“I knew there was something off, it was clear, by his actions were just random. Not of a normal person. He just seemed like he was in his own mind in his own world,” said Delaney Gentle.

The Chicago Tribune reports that Jacobs is on medication and suffers from a mental illness. Jacobs graduated from New Trier High School, then attended Bowdoin College in Maine where he earned a degree in political philosophy in 2010. He attended graduate school at the University of Chicago but is no longer a students.

After the stabbing, the university banned him from campus. The 27-year-old victim survived the attack but was in serious condition. He’s now in Michigan receiving treatment.
