Dog-Related Neighbor Dispute Leads To Warrant Arrest: Blotters

Fake federal agents; arrests for identity theft, domestic battery, shoplifting: Glencoe, Northfield and Winnetka blotter, May 16–June 12

WINNETKA, IL — The following information comes from the Glencoe, Winnetka and Northfield police departments as a record of police activity and incidents reported to the police. Criminal charges represent merely accusations by the state and are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Anyone arrested is innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

INCIDENTS

CRIMINAL DAMAGE

  • A resident in the 700 block of Rosewood Avenue reported that someone had caused $400 worth of damage to their garage door with an unknown object between 10:30 p.m. on May 14 and 9 a.m. on May 15.
  • A resident in the 800 block of Green Bay Road reported that someone caused $1,000 in damage to a window between 4:30 and 7:15 p.m. on May 23.
  • An officer discovered someone caused $600 in damage to Winnetka Park District property in the 700 block of Sheridan Road by driving over a section of the grass sometime between 7 a.m. on June 5 and 8:35 a.m. on June 6.
  • A resident of the 900 block of Old Green Bay Road reported that someone had caused $1,500 in damage to their address sign and landscaping light at the end of their driveway between 6 p.m. on June 8 and 8 a.m. on June 9.

THEFTS

  • Someone stole an unattended iPhone worth $600 that had been left in a backpack outside a locker at Skokie School, 520 Glendale Ave., between 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
  • Someone stole an unattended bicycle worth about $500 that had been left at a bike rack in the 200 block of Sheridan Road between May 11 and May 16.
  • A resident in the 800 block of Locust Street reported that someone stole more than $5,000 worth of jewelry from their home between 12:30 and 4:40 p.m. on May 17.
  • A resident in the 400 block of Sheridan Road reported that someone stole a convex mirror and stand worth $80 from their driveway area between 2:30 and 5 p.m. on May 17.
  • A resident in the 1200 block of Trapp Lane reported that someone stole a wooden street sign between noon on May 19 and 5 p.m. on May 21 for a loss of $400.
  • Someone stole an unattended wallet between 6 and 7 p.m. on May 25 in the 800 block of Sheridan Road for a loss of $75.
  • Someone stole an unattended wallet between 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. on May 25 in the 500 block of Chestnut Street. Cash and cards inside were reported stolen for a loss of $1,630.
  • Someone stole a $1,200 men's bicycle that was locked to a rack in the 700 block of Elm Street between 7:45 a.m. and 6:40 p.m. on May 28.
  • Someone stole a $550 women's bicycle that was chained to a fence in the 700 block of Elm Street between 6:50 and 10:30 p.m. on June 5.

RETAIL THEFT
A Walgreens employee in the 900 block of Green Bay Road reported that someone stole a $14 case of alcohol around 10:23 a.m. on May 16.

IDENTITY THEFTS
An Ash Street resident reported that someone had used their identity to open up a pair of unauthorized checking accounts between May 1 and May 16. There was no loss at the time of the report.

DEFACEMENT
A resident reported around 9:30 a.m. on May 20 that someone had used orange spray paint on an area of grass in a park in the 200 block of Sheridan Road, prompting $50 in estimated repair costs.

SOCIAL SECURITY SCAM
A Sunset Road resident reported that they fielded a phone call from a purported government employee between 1 and 3:33 p.m. on May 28 and provided the caller with $500 worth of gift cards after being told there was an issue with their social security card that needed to be resolved.

IDENTITY THEFT
An Oak Street resident reported that someone used their identity to open a Verizon Wireless account between May 22 and June 1, making unauthorized purchases of iPhones and racking up a bill of more than $4,400.

FEDERAL AGENT SCAM
A Walden Road resident reported that people purporting to be employees of the U.S. Marshals Service and the Social Security Administration called them up between June 4 and June 5 and asked the resident to send cash to resolve an issue.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

A 55-year-old Racine, Wisconsin, man was arrested around 11:45 a.m. on May 15 in the 700 block of Green Bay Road and charged with driving with a suspended driver's license. He was also issued a citation for using an electronic device while driving.

Atul Kumar Singh, 53, of the 1700 block of Baybrook Lane, Naperville, was arrested around 5:30 p.m. on May 22 and charged with battery after officers were dispatched to a report of a battery in progress in the first block of High Street.

A 29-year-old Winnetka man was arrested around 4 p.m. on May 25 in the area of Hibbard and Hill roads and charged with speeding more than 30 mph over the limit.

Wenfred Barnett, 53, of the 1600 block of Dodge Avenue, Evanston, was arrested around 2:30 p.m. on June 1 at the Walgreens, 925 Green Bay Road, and charged with retail theft, resisting arrest and obstructing identification following a report that a person had just shoplifted from the store. While in custody, officers learned Barnett also had two active Cook County warrants for his arrest.

A 26-year-old Chicago man was arrested around 4 p.m. on June 2 in the 500 block of Green Bay Road and charged with driving with a suspended license. He was also issued citations for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and driving without a front license plate.



GLENCOE

INCIDENTS

THEFT
Staff at a business in the first block of Green Bay Road reported around 11:30 a.m. on May 18 that someone had swapped out a more expensive bottle of scotch with a cheaper bottle, paying the reduced price after putting it into another container.

CAR BURGLARY
Someone stole the radio out of an unlocked Range Rover that was parked in the 700 block of Old Green Bay Road prior to 7:20 p.m on May 20.

IDENTITY THEFT
Someone stole $6,000 from the bank account of a Sycamore Lane resident, police were told on the morning of June 6.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
Someone caused more than $500 in damage to the roof duct work for a ventilation system of a building in the 300 block of Randolph Street prior to 10:45 a.m. on June 6.

SOCIAL SECURITY SCAM
A Crescent Drive resident reported around 4 p.m. on June 6 that someone had called claiming there was a problem with the resident's social security number and asking for personal information. It was not clear if the resident's identity was stolen, but there was no loss at the time of the report.

HOME BURGLARY ATTEMPT
Someone tried to get into a vacant home in the 1100 block of Terrace Court by damaging the door to its garage prior to about 8 p.m. on June 7. The burglars did not appear to have made it inside.

FEDERAL AGENT SCAM
A Vernon Avenue resident reported on the morning of June 8 that a purported agent of the U.S. Marshals Service contacted them through unspecified means, accusing the resident of drug trafficking, money laundering and illegally owning five properties through Bank of America. The self-described federal agent convinced the resident to send a $8,743 check through FedEx. When the resident learned it was a scam the shipping company returned the check.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Norvell Meadows, 55, of the 6000 block of South Keating Avenue, Chicago, was arrested at 10:30 a.m. on May 17 at the Cook County criminal courthouse in Chicago and charged with identity theft.

A 61-year-old Chicago man was was issued a citation for soliciting without a permit around 5:45 p.m. on May 19 in the area of Vernon Avenue and Temple Court.

A 25-year-old Evanston man was arrested around 10 p.m. on May 19 in the 1100 block of Skokie Boulevard and charged with driving with a revoked driver's license. He was also issued citations for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and improper use of registration.

A 24-year-old Evanston man was issued two tickets and a citation following a traffic stop around 11:30 a.m. on May 24 in the area of Greenleaf and South avenues. He was ticketed for driving without insurance, disobeying a stop sign and possessing a small amount of cannabis.

A 40-year-old North Chicago man was arrested around 4 p.m. on June 2 in the 600 block of Skokie Boulevard and charged with driving without a valid license. He was also issued a citation for having a loud muffler.

NORTHFIELD

INCIDENTS

DECEPTIVE PRACTICES
A Regent Wood Road resident reported around 7 p.m. on May 13 that a caller had convinced them to spent $900 on computer protection software. But the resident became suspicious, cancelled the transaction through their bank and asked police to investigate.

SCAM ATTEMPT
A Grove Drive resident reported that someone had called them on May 14 claiming that their daughter had been in an accident and asking for a large cash payment. The resident contacted their daughter and confirmed there was no such accident and then reported the incident to police.

UNWANTED MAIL
An employee of Fields BMW, 700 W. Frontage Road, reported around 5 p.m. on May 16 that a Glenview resident had been periodically sending them unwanted letters at work.

THEFT
Someone stole an unattended wallet left in a shopping cart in the parking lot of a grocery store in the 1800 block of Willow Road around 4:15 p.m. on May 19.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
Someone damaged the window to a shoe store in the 200 block of Northfield Road on May 17 or May 18. No estimate of damage was available.

EMAIL SCAM
A Happ Road resident reported around 5 p.m. on May 23 that they had gotten several emails appearing to come from a friend whose email account had been hacked. They requested that the resident buy gift cards and provide their numbers to the sender for an unspecified loss.

BASEBALL CALL
A Northbrook resident called the police shortly after 4:30 p.m. on May 26 to report that their car had been hit by a stray baseball from the baseball fields at Willow Road and Willow Park while they drove west in the 2000 block of Willow Road. Officers referred to driver to the Northfield Park District after documenting the incident.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
A resident in the 1700 block of Harding Road reported around 5:30 p.m. on May 31 that their recycling bin and mailbox had been struck by a car around 1:45 a.m. that day, causing an estimated $50 in damage.

THEFT
A plumber working in the 2300 block of Dorina Drive reported that someone stole a plumbing camera worth about $7,000 that had been left unattended in the driveway of the home between 9 a.m. and noon on June 3.

SUSPICIOUS INCIDENTS

  • A resident in the 2000 block of Norfork Road called police shortly before 7 p.m. on June 3 to report that several pieces of construction equipment parked by a contractor "appeared to have been partially burned." Officers determined no crime had occurred, but the resident requested they document the incident.
  • Officers were called to the 300 block of Wagner Road around 8:30 p.m. on June 4 for a report from a resident in the area that an unidentified car had parked in front of their home at 7 p.m. and again at 8 p.m. The car was done before police arrived.

IDENTITY THEFT
A Winnetka Road resident reported on the afternoon of June 9 that someone had made an unauthorized purchase of an iPhone using their AT&T Wireless account.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Douglas W. Wattley, 19, of the 1900 block of Larkdale Drive, Glenview, was issued a local ordinance citation for possession of false identification at 1 p.m. on May 29 in connection with a May 24 incident where his lost wallet was turned in and found to contain a fraudulent driver's license. Possession of a fake identification can be charged as a felony in Illinois.

Brian R. Boldt, 50, of the 200 block of Avon Avenue, Northfield, was arrested around 9:30 p.m. on June 9 on an active arrest warrant issued by a DuPage County judge for contempt of court after officers were called to a dispute among neighbors related to an argument about both resident's dogs being off-leash.
