New Trier Grads Remembered Fondly by Friends

3 victims of weekend tragedy on Wisconsin lake described with phrases such as "role model," "gentle manner" and "rare soul."

WINNETKA, IL - The three young men already identified as the victims of a deadly boating accident on Mill Lake in southern Wisconsin over the weekend are remembered fondly by those who knew them best.

For 21-year-old Mori Weinstein of Wilmette, who on Wednesday was the first to be laid to rest, friends spoke of his “infectious smile, gentle manner and cooking,” according to the Chicago Tribune.

“It’s comforting to know he’s in a better place,” said friend Brandon Goldberg, who attended the University of Kansas with Weinstein.

Weinstein and two others - Christopher McQuillen, 21, Winnetka and Lanny Patrick Sack, 20, Winnetka - were found dead after they disappeared early Sunday morning while out on a canoe. A fourth man who was with them at the time has not been found nor identified, and presumably died as well. A search for that man is ongoing.

Services for Sack are set for Saturday, Jan. 9 at 3 p.m. at Winnetka Congregational Church.

Sack, like Weinstein, attended the University of Kansas. He was also a graduate of New Trier High School, where all four victims had attended at some point.

Remembered as an “avid outdoorsman,” an obituary for Sack says he enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a talented golfer and former baseball player for the Trevians.

“As a role model, Patrick loved mentoring, coaching and developing young athletes, coaching summer and fall baseball.”

McQuillen, in an obituary via Donnellan Family Funeral Services, was described as “a rare soul” and “a champion of the underdog.”

“He was a very sensitive, outgoing and down-to-earth young man with an extremely caring heart. His lack of pretense, natural magnetism, love of life and adventure were contagious. Chris believed in family and embodied true character. His deep sense of loyalty to friends created loving and unbreakable bonds. Chris was a champion of the underdog. His true compassion for others drove him to remarkable efforts to help those in need, volunteer with those with disabilities and mentor many. We will miss him forever but know that his spirit lives on.”

A visitation for McQuillen will be held Thursday, and a funeral Mass on Friday at Sacred Heart Church in Winnetka.
