Residents Concerned About Proposal for 7-Story Building in Winnetka

One Winnetka seeks to add 120 apartments, retail space to corner of Elm and Lincoln.

Winnetka residents concerned that a seven-story luxury rental and retail project downtown will sour its small-town charm showed up in droves at Village Hall Wednesday night to voice their displeasure.

The proposal for One Winnetka, a project that would include 120 apartments and more than 46,000 square feet of commercial space at the corner of Elm Street and Lincoln Avenue, is being made by David Trandel of Stonestreet Partners, the Winnetka talk reports.

“The stars are aligned in this moment in time for something truly extraordinary to be built in Winnetka,” said Trandel.

But most residents who have voiced their opinions see it quite differently.

“I love Lucien’s buildings in Paris with the (Georges-Eugene) Haussmann style, but Winnetka is not Paris and it’s not downtown Chicago,” Winnetka resident Dania Leemputte said. “And Beaux-Arts is not in keeping with the village’s pastoral feel.”
