Shoplifter Swaps Out Sandals; Panera Patron Pickpocketed: Blotter
Identity thefts, car burglaries, shoplifting and a drunken driving arrest appear on this week's New Trier area police blotters.
The following information comes from the Glencoe, Northfield, Wilmette and Winnetka police departments as a record of police activity and incidents reported to the police. Criminal charges represent merely accusations by the state and are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Anyone arrested is innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
GLENCOE
INCIDENTS
IDENTITY THEFTS
- Someone stole the identity of a Crescent Drive resident and racked up more than $2,000 in charges at Ashley Homestore, police were told on the afternoon of Dec. 2. The thief also tried unsuccessfully to open up credit cards with Big Lots, Target and Wayfair.
- A South Avenue resident reported on the morning of Dec. 3 that someone had changed their address on a Saks Fifth Avenue account and attempted a $10,000 a purchase. The charges were reversed.
CAR BURGLARY
Someone burglarized an unlocked minivan in the 500 block of Drexel Avenue prior to 7:30 p.m. Dec. 2, rummaging through the interior and leaving the contents of strewn around the car. Nothing was listed as stolen at the time of the report.

NORTHFIELD
INCIDENTS
ILLEGAL LANDSCAPING
Police were called to a home in the 100 block of Sterling Lane around 11 a.m. Nov. 28 for a report that landscapers were working outside of the hours allowed on weekends and holidays. Officers explained the village's ordinance to the landscapers.
SUSPICIOUS DELIVERY
A resident in the 100 block of Avon Avenue reported around 6:30 p.m. Nov. 30 that they received a package that they had not ordered. Police suggested they contact the post office to return the parcel.
ARRESTS/CITATIONS
A 41-year-old Chicago man was arrested around 9 a.m. Nov. 27 and charged with driving without a valid license following a traffic stop in the area of Willow Road and Lagoon Drive. He was also issued citations for running a stop sign and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.
A 39-year-old Chicago man was arrested around 10:15 a.m. Nov. 28 and charged with driving with a suspended license following a traffic stop around Willow and Sunset Ridge roads. He was also issued a no safety test for a commercial vehicle citation.
WILMETTE
INCIDENTS
THEFT
A patron at Panera Bread, 1199 Wilmette Ave., reported that someone stole their wallet from inside an unattended purse between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Nov. 22.
SHOPLIFTING
- Staff at the Birkenstock store at 3232 Lake Ave. reported that a man in his 50s came in before 1:30 p.m. Nov. 26 and asked to try on a pair of sandals. Staff lost track of him while handling other customers, later realizing the man had stolen the sandals and left his old shoes behind.
- An unidentified man stole more than $360 worth of anti-dandruff shampoo after filling up a backpack. Police were told he fled in a Chevrolet sedan before officers arrived.
IDENTITY THEFT
A Michigan Avenue resident reported on the evening of Nov. 26 that someone had used their identity to open an account with Citibank.
ARRESTS/CITATIONS
A 36-year-old homeless woman was issued a retail theft citation around 2:30 p.m. Nov. 26 after police pulled over a car that staff at the Walgreens, 3232 Lake Ave., reported had been used as the getaway vehicle by a man and woman who had stolen items from the store. Northfield police spotted the vehicle at Willow and Harms roads. Wilmette police investigated and released the man without charges before returning all the stolen items to Walgreens.
A 39-year-old Chicago man was arrested around 4 p.m. Nov. 27 and charged with driving with a suspended license following a traffic stop in the 300 block of Ridge Road. He was also issued other unspecified traffic citations.
WINNETKA
INCIDENTS
CAR BURGLARY
Someone rummaged through two unlocked cars parked overnight on Nov. 25 to Nov. 26 in a driveway on the 400 block of Birch Street. Nothing was listed as stolen at the time of the report.
THEFT
Someone stole a Christmas tree from the New Trier High School Tri-Ship Tree Sale in the 300 block of Winnetka Avenue around 12:30 p.m. Nov. 29 for a loss of $70.
CRIMINAL DAMAGE
A cleaning crew at a business in the 100 block of Green Bay Road reported that someone had damaged an alarm sensor and two exterior doors between 3 and 9 p.m. on Dec. 1. The costs to repair the damage were not known at the time of the report.
ARRESTS
Olga Alvarez, 37, of the 2300 block of North Lister Avenue, Chicago, was arrested around 10:45 p.m. Nov. 27 in the 600 block of Maple Street and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and DUI with a BAC above 0.08 after police got a call about an erratic driver in the area of Sheridan Road and Maple Street.
