WINNETKA, IL — The following information comes from the Glencoe, Winnetka and Northfield police departments as a record of police activity and incidents reported to the police. Criminal charges represent merely accusations by the state and are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Anyone arrested is innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.


WINNETKA

INCIDENTS

RETAIL THEFT
Two bottles of champagne were reported stolen from the Grand Food Center, 606 Green Bay Road, shortly before noon on June 13 for a loss of nearly $400.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE

  • An officer reported around 10:30 p.m. on June 15 that someone threw an object at a vehicle in the 300 block of Sheridan Road and caused $500 damage to its side panel.
  • A motorist reported someone punctured their vehicle's rear tire while stopped at the intersection of Willow and Hubbard roads, causing $150 in damage.
  • A watermelon was thrown at the front door of a home in the 900 block of Pine Street between 11:40 and 11:45 p.m. on June 21, causing $250 in damage to a door frame. Another watermelon was thrown at a home in the 900 block of Pine Street between 10:30 p.m. on June 22 and 5:30 p.m. on June 23, causing $250 in damage to another door frame.

CAR BURGLARY
A resident in the 1100 block of Spruce Street reported around 12:15 p.m. on June 16 that someone had stolen the owner's manual and document cases from two unlocked vehicles left parked in a driveway for a $100 loss.

BIKE THEFTS

  • Police were told someone stole a men's bicycle worth $400 from a bike rack at New Trier High School between May 28 and June 7.
  • Someone stole an unattended bicycle left in the rear of a driveway in the 1000 block of Ash Street between 1:10 and 1:30 p.m. on June 27.

JEWELRY THEFT
Someone stole several pieces of jewelry that were left unattended at the Winnetka Community House, 620 Lincoln Ave., between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. on June 15. The estimated loss was reported to be more than $5,000.

KEY THEFT/DAMAGE
A resident in the 600 block of Blackthorn Road reported that someone damaged a keypad and removed a spare key from a box for a $40 loss between 7 p.m. on June 18 and 8:30 a.m. on June 19.

IDENTITY THEFT
A Scott Avenue resident reported that someone used their identity to open up a Progressive insurance account around 9 a.m. on June 19 for a loss of $127.

TRESPASSING
A trespasser gained access to a gated property in the 400 block of Sheridan Road and walked around the outside of a home between 10:25 and 10:53 p.m. on June 23.

HOME BURGLARY
A resident of the 1200 block of Ash Street reported that someone got into their home between 10 p.m. on June 24 and 6:30 a.m. on June 25, stealing two wallets with cash, cards and a check for a loss of $4,660.

ATTEMPTED BURGLARY
A resident in the 900 block of Oak Street reported that someone tried to break into their home around 4 a.m. on June 25. Nothing was reported stolen.

COUNTERFEIT CASH
An employee of the McDonald's at 858 Green Bay Road reported that someone passed two counterfeit bills to buy food around 11:30 a.m. on June 25 for a loss of $35.38.

CHECK FRAUD
A Fuller Lane resident reported around 5:30 p.m. on June 27 that someone altered and cashed a check obtained from the mail for a loss of $2,675.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

A 44-year-old Kenosha man was arrested around 6:45 a.m. on June 11 in the 1300 block of Willow Road and charged with driving without a valid license and cited for operating a vehicle while using an electronic device.

Christoper L. Arndt, 26, of the 6200 block of North Clark Street, Chicago, was issued a citation for theft around 9:30 a.m. on June 11 by officers called to a report of a theft in progress at the Grand Food Center, 606 Green Bay Road.

Derrick L. Bryan, 26, of the 39600 block of Warren Lane, Beach Park, was arrested around 11:30 p.m. on June 15 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and without a valid driver's license. He was also issued a citation for improper parking on the roadway.

Carlton Brooks, 31, of the 5600 block of South Hermitage Avenue, Chicago, was arrested around 5:30 p.m. on June 27 at the Winnetka Police Department and charged with identity theft in connection with an incident where someone made $272.85 in unauthorized purchases using the identity of a Winnetka resident.


GLENCOE

INCIDENTS

IDENTITY THEFT

  • Someone tried to file a state tax return using the identity of a South Avenue resident prior to 11 a.m. on June 12.
  • Someone made more than $10,000 in unauthorized withdrawals from the personal and business accounts of a Park Avenue resident at Chase Bank at some point prior to the afternoon of June 14.
  • Someone used the identity of an Adams Avenue resident to made an unauthorized purchase of nearly $800 prior to 10 a.m. June 15.
  • A Valley Road resident reported around 2:30 p.m. on June 17 that someone had unsuccessfully tried to file a state tax return using their identity.
  • Someone used the identity of a Glade Road resident to be admitted into a medical facility and charged $33,000 worth of treatment to them. The same person also tried to open up credit cards. Both were declined by the credit card companies.
  • A Green Bay Road resident reported around 9:30 a.m. on June 23 that someone had used their identity to open up an unauthorized Wells Fargo account and deposited a $783 fraudulent check. The thief then used the card in several states before Wells Fargo closed the account.

CAR BURGLARY
Someone burglarized an unlocked BMW and Mercedes that had been left parked in the 900 block of Bluff Road and stole a $350 iPad and cell phone accessories valued at $70 from inside at some point prior to 7 a.m. June 13.

THEFT FROM VEHICLE
Someone stole the front license plate from a BMW parked in the first block of Park Avenue prior to 2:30 p.m. June 16.

CREDIT CARD FRAUD
A Fairfield Road resident reported around 10:30 a.m. on June 17 that someone had gotten control of their credit card before they did and spent $3,800 on it.

HATE CRIME/HARASSMENT
A Lincoln Avenue resident reported around 5:30 a.m. on June 22 that someone had been sending them "obscene and religious-based text messages" to their cell phone.

CAR BURGLARY/FRAUD
Someone got into an unlocked Volkswagen in the 1100 block of Sheridan Road and stole an iPhone and credit cards from inside. The resident later discovered a thief had bought $1,658.15 in Bitcoin using their Chase Bank card. The bank later reversed the charge.

TICKET SCAM
A Woodlawn Avenue resident reported around 12:45 p.m. on June 23 that they had responded to an online classified advertisement offering tickets to the Rolling Stones. After sending $300 to the purported seller, the resident never received the tickets and contacted police.

THEFT
Someone entered a utility trailer in the 600 block of Dundee Road prior to 2:30 p.m. on June 25, stealing a concrete saw and leaf blower worth more than $500 combined.

STOLEN CAR FLEES
Someone stole an 2013 Acura left unlocked while parked in the 300 block of South Avenue. Shortly after 9 a.m. on June 27, an officer noticed one of two vehicles that appeared to be travelling together violate several traffic laws. The officer tried to pull one over but they fled, running stop signs, stop lights and speeding more than 25 mph above the limit.

RECOVERED STOLEN CAR
A 2017 Kia found illegally parked in the 600 block of Village Court around 2:15 a.m. on June 30 turned out to have been stolen from Lake Bluff.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Sandra Carlson, 65, of the 1100 block of Linda Lane, Glencoe, was issued a dog bite citation due to the alleged behavior of her dog, Tessa, in the 300 block of Park Place around 11 a.m. on June 11.

A 25-year-old Chicago woman was arrested around 8:15 p.m. on June 16 and charged with driving with a suspended license and using a cell phone while driving following a traffic stop in the area of Dundee Road and Pebblewood Lane.

Amari D. Harvey, 21, of the 1900 block of Lee Street, Evanston, was arrested around 9:15 a.m. on June 24 at her home and charged with aggravated identity theft from a senior citizen.

Candice N. Faassen, 33, of the 25500 block of West Columbia Bay, Lake Villa, was arrested around 7:45 a.m. on June 2 in the area of Dundee Road and Vernon Avenue and charged with aggravated driving under the influence, driving under the influence of drugs and driving without a valid license. She was also issued citations for improper lane usage and unsafe equipment.

Ambrosia Perez-Benitez, 28, of the 300 block of Inland Drive, Wheeling, was arrested around 10:45 p.m. on July 1 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol following a traffic stop in the area of Lake Cook Road and Interstate 94. She was also issued citations for unsafe tired, driving without insurance and illegal transportation of alcohol.

INCIDENTS

HARASSMENT
A representative of a law firm in the 100 block of Waukegan Road reported around 10:30 a.m. on June 10 that a Glenview resident had been sending unwanted communications. Police suggested the law firm send a letter to the person informing them any further communication was not welcomed.

DOORBELL TAMPERING?
A resident of the first block of Regent Wood Road reported around 2:30 p.m. on June 12 that they believed someone had tampered with their doorbell between October 2018 and April 2019.

GIFT CARD SCAMS

  • A Thornwood Lane resident reported on June 13 that they received a message purporting to come from Microsoft which said a pornographic website had charged $15,000 to their checking account. The only way to recover the money, according to the message, was to provide numbers to gift cards at Target and Best Buy to pay for "recovery software." The amount of loss was not specified.
  • A Willow Road resident reported on June 15 that they had also gotten a message from Microsoft. This one claimed a pornographic website had debited $5,000, and demanded numbers from gift cards to "refund" their account.

GARAGE BURGLARY
Someone stole a leaf blower worth $575 from an open garage in the 1600 block of Winnetka Road around 11 a.m. on June 7.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
A resident in the 200 block of Wagner Road reported around 10:30 a.m. on June 15 that someone had cut the wires on lights over their deck and a light bulb had been removed from a fixture for an estimated $50 loss.

BASEBALL ACCIDENT
A motorist reported around 6:30 p.m. on June 21 that a baseball from Willow Park had struck their windshield. A parent of several young people playing baseball at the time and the motorist exchanged information and the incident was documented at the request of both parties.

SUSPICIOUS RECEIPT
A Garden Lane resident reported on the morning of June 26 that they had gotten an email with receipts for online purchases they had never made.

VULGAR LETTER
A resident in the 300 block of Jeffrey Street reported around 4 p.m. on June 27 that someone had sent them an anonymous letter with profanity in it. The resident told police they believed it may have been sent by another resident of the area with whom they had previously had a dispute.

TRESPASSING
A resident in the 800 block of North Happ Road reported around noon on June 28 that two people were riding their bicycles on their property from a trail behind the home. Police suggested posting signs that say, "No Trespassing."

THEFT
A patron at a bakery in the 300 block of South Happ Road reported someone had stolen their wallet from inside around noon on June 29.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

A 22-year-old Mt. Prospect man was arrested around 5:30 p.m. on June 15 and charged with driving without a valid license and with an expired registration following a traffic stop in the area of Wagner Road and Bosworth Lane.

Richard M. Keefer, 53, of the 600 block of North Happ Road, Northfield, was arrested around 5 p.m. on June 16 at an unspecified location and charged with domestic battery and interfering of the reporting of domestic battery.

A 38-year-old Chicago man was arrested around 7:15 a.m. on June 20 and charged with driving with a suspended license and expired registration following a traffic stop in the area of Willow Road and Bristol Street.

A 38-year-old Chicago woman was arrested around 10:15 a.m. on June 20 and charged with driving with a suspended license and cited for using an electronic device following a traffic stop in the area of Lagoon Drive and Willow Road.

A 41-year-old Chicago man was arrested around 4 p.m. on June 22 and charged with driving without a valid license and cited for using an electronic device following a traffic stop in the area of Willow Road and Bristol Street.

A 20-year-old Whiting, Indiana man was arrested around 2:30 p.m. on June 25 and charged with driving without a valid license and cited for an overweight vehicle following a traffic stop in the area of Willow Road and Whittier Lane.

A 38-year-old Des Plaines man was arrested around 4:43 p.m. on June 26 and charged with driving with a suspended license. He was also issued citations for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and littering on the highway.
