Mom, 17 teenagers charged over underage drinking party; home burglar leaves upon resident's request: North Shore Blotters, Oct. 12 to Nov. 1

The following information comes from the Glencoe, Northfield, Wilmette and Winnetka police departments as a record of police activity and incidents reported to the police. Criminal charges represent merely accusations by the state and are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Anyone arrested is innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.


GLENCOE

INCIDENTS

SCAMS

  • A Beinlich Court resident reported on Oct. 10 that someone had called them claiming that their car was found in San Antonio, Texas, and asking for their personal information to purportedly prove they were the owner. The resident provided personal information before determining it was a scam and hanging up.
  • A Harthorn Avenue resident used a search engine to look for a phone number to call Amazon, but when the resident called, they were scammed into giving over their credit card number for a phony refund, police were told on Oct. 11. The scammer unsuccessfully tried to transfer $467 to Kenya for the purchase of a pair of Xbox consoles.
  • After being scammed into believing their Apple account had been hacked, a Willow Tree Lane resident reported on Oct. 13 they were directed to a website where the scammer claimed to fix the problem before demanding the resident buy a Target gift card to pay. The resident hung up before suffering any monetary loss.
  • A Jackson Avenue resident reported on Oct. 26 that a scammer on the Poshmark app contacted them and attempted to trick them into depositing a bad check.

THEFTS

  • Someone stole a sign valued at $15 from the front yard of a home in the 500 block of Vernon Avenue at some point prior to 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 13.
  • Someone stole an unlocked bicycle from a driveway in the 400 block of Woodlawn Avenue prior to 1:40 p.m. on Oct. 29.
  • A Sycamore Lane resident reported on Oct. 24 that someone had made an unauthorized $15,000 withdrawal from their Wintrust bank account.

IDENTITY THEFTS

  • Someone unsuccessfully tried to file for unemployment benefits using the identity of an Elm Ridge Drive resident, police were told on Oct. 24.
  • The identity of an Oak Drive resident was used to open accounts with Sprint and Verizon. The accounts were closed and the resident did not suffer any monetary loss.

CAR BURGLARIES

  • An unlocked 2002 Hyundai was burglarized prior to 1:40 p.m. Oct. 17 in the 300 block of Jefferson Avenue. Nothing was reported stolen at the time of the report.
  • Someone burglarized a 2014 Mazda left unlocked in the 500 block of South Avenue prior to 9 a.m. Oct. 23, rummaging through the interior without stealing anything.

TELEPHONE HARASSMENT
A Park Avenue resident reported on Oct. 12 that that someone threatened them over the SnapChat app. Police opened an investigation.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Deandre S. Brown, 19, of the 6100 block of South Honore Street, Chicago, was arrested around 1 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Glencoe Public Safety Department on a warrant issued that same day stemming from a charge of possession of a stolen motor vehicle. Police said the car was stolen Dec. 20, 2018, from the 500 block of Oakdale Avenue after it was left unlocked with a key fob inside. Officers encountered the car as it sped out of village limits. The car was found the next day in the 6000 block of South Wood Street, Chicago. After conducting an multi-month investigation into all vehicles stolen across the North Shore, police were able to identify Brown and issue a warrant.

NORTHFIELD

INCIDENTS

PARK-AND-PLUG
A resident in the 4000 block of Arbor Lane reported around 4 p.m. Oct. 16 that someone had parked in the area and plugged a device into an exterior electrical outlet. The resident gave officers the car's license plate and asked police to tell its owner they were forbidden from using the electricity at the building.

IDENTITY THEFTS

  • A Happ Road resident reported on Oct. 22 that someone opened an unauthorized Visa card in their name.
  • A Willow Hill Court resident reported on Oct. 24 that someone had tried to open a TJ Maxx store credit card using their identity.

EMAIL SCAM
A representative of a business at the Willow Hill Executive Center, 2 Northfield Plaza, reported on Oct. 25 that they had received an "spoofed" email that appeared to come from an employee and asked to change the direct deposit information for their paycheck. The business later learned the email was fraudulent and police opened and investigation.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Kriket K. Utz, 54, of the 2000 block of Suffork Road was issued a citation for use of premises for consumption of alcohol by a minor after police were called for a report of underage drinking at her house. As part of the same incident, police issued consumption of alcohol by a minor citations to 17 teens found at the house, including seven Wilmette residents, three residents of Northfield, three from Kenilworth, two from Winnetka and one from Glencoe.

An 18-year-old Northfield man was issued a citation for consumption of alcohol by a minor after police were called to the 200 block of Wagner Road around 4 a.m. Oct. 27 by a homeowner who reported someone was banging on their door.


WILMETTE

INCIDENTS

CAR BURGLARIES

  • Someone stole personal items from a car parked in the 1500 block of Walnut Avenue between Oct. 11 and Oct. 14.
  • A resident in the 1100 block of Sheridan Road reported that someone got into both of their unlocked cars parked in a driveway between 9:30 p.m. Oct. 15 and 8 a.m. Oct. 16, stealing various personal belongings.
  • A resident in the 400 block of 9th Street reported that someone got into their unlocked car between 8 and 8:45 p.m. Oct. 17 and stole various personal items.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE

  • Someone damaged a window on a Wilmette Park District bus between Oct. 11 and Oct. 14 while it was parked in the lot at the Community Recreation Center, 3000 Glenview Road.
  • A CTA employee reported that someone spray painted a train car between 2 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. Oct. 19 while it was parked at the 349 Linden Ave. yard.
  • A resident in the 2300 block of Old Glenview Road reported that someone shot their kitchen window with what appeared to have been a BB gun between 10 and 10:30 p.m. Oct. 19.
  • A school employee told police someone damaged a plaque attached to a bench on the west side of Harper Elemetnary School, 1101 Dartmouth St., on Oct. 24 or Oct. 25.
  • Someone "keyed" a car parked in the Loyola Academy parking lot, 1100 Laramie Ave., between 10:25 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Oct. 26.

SHOPLIFTING

  • Staff at the Walgreens, 3232 Lake Ave., reported that a man liquor around 3:45 p.m. on Oct. 16.
  • Staff at the Walgreens, 3232 Lake Ave., reported on Oct. 23 that a review of surveillance footage revealed a man had stolen over-the-counter medications.
  • Staff at the Walgreens, 3232 Lake Ave., reported on Oct. 30 that a man stole four bottles of liquor around 4:15 p.m. before leaving in a white four-door sedan. He was described as between 30 and 40 years old, about 6 feet tall and white, with a black winter coat and black winter cap.

THEFTS

  • Someone stole a locked bicycle from the rack at the Metra station, 722 Green Bay Road, between Sept. 28 and Oct. 19.
  • Someone stole a locked bicycle from the rack at Highcrest School, 569 Hunter Road, between 8:30 a.m. and 3:40 p.m.
  • Staff at the Wilmette Theatre, 1122 Central Ave., reported falling victim to a quick-change scam around 4:45 p.m. Oct. 27. A man asked to break a $100 bill into smaller denominations, eventually leaving with a candy bar, $98 in cash and his original $100 bill.
  • A patron at the Corner Bakery, 3232 Lake Ave., reported around 11 a.m. Oct. 18 that someone stole their wallet while they ate.
  • A patron at Panera Bread, 1199 Wilmette Ave., reported someone stole their wallet from inside a purse between 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Oct. 26.
  • Someone stole a soil compactor from a construction site in the 800 block of Sheridan Road between 11:50 a.m. and 3 p.m. Oct. 25.

DISORDERLY CONDUCT
Staff at the Bank of America, 171 Green Bay Road, reported that a man came in and tried to cash a $150 pre-paid Verizon card at the bank around 2 p.m. Oct. 15. When the transaction was denied, the customer spit at the employee and called him a derogatory name. He was described as a bald, 5-foot, 9-inch, 180-pound man of Middle Eastern descent with an accent who drove a silver SUV.

TELEPHONE HARASSMENT
A Hibbard Road resident reported getting numerous harassing calls from an unidentified woman who may live in Minnesota.

FRAUD
A Millbrook Lane resident reported on Oct. 21 that they had gotten a call from a scammer purporting to be with "Apple Care" letting them know that their iPad and iPhone had been hacked. The resident downloaded some recommended apps and let the caller take control of their devices. The scammer asked the resident to buy $500 in "security cards" from GameStop. Just before buying them, the resident realized it was a scam.

HOME BURGLARY
A resident in the 200 block of Linden Avenue reported that an unidentified man came into their house shortly before 11 a.m. Oct. 22 through an unlocked back door. The resident told the man to leave and he did. He was later scene heading east on Linden Avenue.

ARRESTS

Chrishon Mahone, 19, of the 2600 block of West 12th Place, Chicago, was arrested around 4:30 a.m. Oct. 17 and charged with driving under the the influence of drugs following a traffic stop in the 2600 block of Lake Avenue. Police reported they pulled him over after noticing heavy front end damage on his car. Officers reported he failed field sobriety tests and refused to provide blood or urine samples.

Jesus Barrera, 18, of the 300 block of Custer Avenue, Evanston, was arrested around 12:45 a.m. Oct. 20 in the 2400 block of Wilmette Avenue and charged with harassment through electronic communication and cited for underage drinking after police were told he had placed several threatening phone calls.

Daniel G. Morse, 28, of the 700 block of Southwest 28th Street in Ankeny, Iowa, was arrested around 3:30 a.m. Oct. 21 on an active warrant issued by authorities in Polk County, Iowa, in connection with a burglary charge after police pulled over a car he was driving in the area of Linden and Ash streets in Winnetka for a traffic violation.

Lee Alexopoulos, 38, of the 7200 block of West 78th Street, Bridgeview, was arrested around 9:30 a.m. Oct. 21 on an active warrant issued by the DuPage County sheriff's office for failure to appear in court in connection with a charge of driving with a revoked license after Wilmette police showed up at the scene of a one-car crash in the 2100 block of Old Glenview Road.

Ashley Williams, 23, of the 2600 block of West Medford Avenue, Milwaukee, and Camara Hamilton, 22, with a listed address of the Milwaukee Women's Correctional Center at 615 W. Keefe Ave., were arrested shortly after noon Oct. 22 following a brief chase. Wilmette police said an officer tried to stop their car in the 900 block of Skokie Boulevard on suspicion it had been involved in several recent shoplifting incidents. The car took off northbound on the Edens Express, but eventually its front tire blew out and it pulled over on the shoulder just south of Dundee Road. Williams and Hamilton took off running and were taken into custody a short time later by police from Wilmette and Northbrook.

Police said an investigation determined Williams and Hamilton had just carried out a retail theft in Skokie and had multiple warrants. Hamilton was turned over to Skokie police and turned over Williams, who also had warrants from Cook County, Will County, Hoffman Estates and Niles, to Northbrook police. A complete list of their pending Illinois charges was not immediately available.


WINNETKA

INCIDENTS

IDENTITY THEFT

  • A Green Bay Road resident reported around 4 p.m. Oct. 17 that someone had used their identity to get a fraudulent driver's license and used it to deposit and withdraw funds at the resident's bank. There was no financial loss at the time of the report.
  • A Foxdale Avenue resident reported that someone had used their identity to open a JC Penny's credit card account between Oct. 9 and Oct. 19 and make nearly $1,600 in unauthorized purchases.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
Someone caused $2,000 in damage to an office window at the southwest corner of a building in the 500 block of Winnetka Avenue.

CAR BURGLARY
Someone burglarized a car in the 500 block of Provident Avenue between 3 p.m. Oct. 24 and noon Oct. 25 and rummaged through its interior. Nothing was reported stolen and it was not was not clear if the car was locked at the time of the incident.

ARRESTS

Fabian Anthony Torres, 33, of the 9700 block of South Escanaba Avenue, Chicago, was arrested around 6:45 a.m. Oct. 24 in the 900 block of on an active arrest warrant after police were called to the 900 block of Tower Road for a report of a suspicious person walking around the area.
