The Ames Human Relations Commission has named Janet Hopper as the recipient of its 2020 Humanitarian Award.

The Ames Human Relations Commission named Janet Hopper as the recipient of its 2020 Humanitarian Award. The award recognizes and honors a worthy individual whose contributions to our community demonstrate extraordinary quality, especially in efforts to promote diversity, inclusion, and equity.

Jill Crosser, member of the Human Relations Commission, presented Hopper with the award at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration held at Ames Middle School on Monday, Jan. 20.
Hopper is an Ames resident and retired Roland-Story High School counselor, where she went beyond normal requirements to help disadvantaged students, including helping one student through the steps to become an American citizen. She continually helps individuals when they need assistance, adopting families in need by helping them with groceries, gas, and clothing. Hopper is a member of Altrusa International, an organization focused on community service.
