1. 2026 Iowa Rocks Talent Youth Competition Announces 12 Finalists for Live Competition at Pearson Lakes Art Center (dmcityview.com) — Young Iowa musicians competing in the 2026 Iowa Rocks Talent finals could soon be recording right here in Cedar Falls, thanks to prize sessions donated by Catamount Recording Studio. The September 5 live competition in Okoboji will showcase 12 youth finalists from across the state, with judges awarding top honors plus special recognition for vocals, instrumentation, and stage presence.
   

2. North Iowans Win $600K with Lottery Scratchers, $100,000 Winner in St. Ansgar Still Unclaimed (kchanews.com) — A Cedar Falls resident, Ryan Bushbaum, recently scored $50,000 on a Powerball ticket he bought at a Kwik Star in Waverly, joining several other big north Iowa lottery winners. The story also notes two $300,000 scratch-ticket prizes already claimed and a still-unclaimed $100,000 Powerball ticket sold in St. Ansgar that expires December 17.
   

3. Waterloo Man Sentenced to Federal Prison for Making Machineguns (kchanews.com) — Cedar Falls residents should know their police department helped a federal task force investigate a Waterloo man who converted semiautomatic guns into illegal machineguns at home. The 35-year-old was sentenced to just over a year in federal prison, fined $5,000, and will serve three years of supervised release after his term.
   

4. Iowa DNR Fishing Report for Week of August 27, 2026 – 95.1 The Bull (951thebull.com) — If you're planning to fish around Cedar Falls and Waterloo this weekend, expect slow action for panfish and largemouth bass on local lakes, with water temperatures in the upper 70s. The broader Iowa DNR report highlights low Mississippi River levels, good catfish and walleye bites on several rivers, and generally strong trout stream conditions across northeast and eastern Iowa.
