• Big expansion approved for New Orleans area landfill, making it Louisiana's largest (nola.com) — A major expansion of the River Birch landfill complex near Avondale has been approved, more than doubling its capacity and extending operations through 2090. State regulators say the project will protect the environment and keep odors controlled, while nearby residents and environmental groups remain worried about smells and methane emissions affecting communities around Avondale and Waggaman.
