East Baton Rouge Parish Schools' Magnet Mania 2026 returning to LASM (wbrz.com) — Families in Baton Rouge can explore East Baton Rouge Parish Schools' magnet options at the free Magnet Mania 2026 event on Oct. 4 at the Louisiana Art and Science Museum downtown. You'll see student performances, learn about themes from STEM to arts and Montessori, and even get a chance to win a magnet seat for the 2027-28 school year before the priority application period opens Oct. 14.
   

2. Sister of hit-and-run victim speaks out over bail amount (wafb.com) — A Baton Rouge family is questioning why the woman accused in a July hit-and-run that killed 35-year-old Travis Barconey received a $25,000 bail after allegedly fleeing for two months. Relatives and another victim's mother argue the amount undercuts Jody's Law reforms and doesn't reflect the seriousness of leaving the scene, vowing to push lawmakers and judges for tougher standards.
   

3. Four Historically or Predominately Black Colleges to Participate in Faculty Training Program (jbhe.com) — Faculty at Baton Rouge Community College will join a new national training program aimed at improving teaching and boosting student success, alongside three other historically or predominantly Black community colleges. Participants can earn ACUE's Effective Teaching certification and gain ongoing access to ACUE Commons resources on topics like AI in education, workforce readiness, and holistic student support, potentially strengthening outcomes for local students.

From jazz to fair food, Baton Rouge's fall calendar offers something for everyone (brweeklypress.com) — Baton Rouge's fall calendar is packed with concerts, festivals, art shows and food events stretching from early October through New Year's Eve. From Sundays in St. George and River City Jazz Masters at Manship Theatre to Ogden Park Prowl, the Greater Baton Rouge State Fair, Louisiana Book Festival and Red Stick Revelry, there are plenty of ways to plan your weekends close to home.
   

5. LSU Kinesiology Showcases Health Research and Innovation to Louisiana Leadership Health Fellows (lsu.edu) — LSU's College of Human Sciences & Education recently hosted Louisiana Leadership Health Fellows in Baton Rouge, highlighting local research in injury rehab, neuroscience, cancer care and rural health. Faculty from the School of Kinesiology showcased how their labs and partnerships with area health systems and the Institute for the Health & Performance of Champions are turning Baton Rouge-based research into practical health solutions across the state.
