JPSO SWAT team involved in hours-long standoff with man in wooded area in Marrero (nola.com) — Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office deputies and the SWAT team spent hours Wednesday morning in a standoff with a person hiding in woods off Lapalco Boulevard near Westwood Drive in Marrero. Residents driving by reported armored vehicles, green smoke, and heavily armed deputies taking cover, though no injuries had been reported and few details about the suspect were released.
   

2. Jefferson Parish residents complain new water meters raised bills (wdsu.com) — Jefferson Parish residents are sounding the alarm about sharply higher water bills they blame on newly installed meters, telling council members some charges now exceed their electric bills. At a tense Wednesday meeting, the council acknowledged problems but took no immediate action, instead deferring water and sewer rate items to the Sept. 30 meeting. Locals should watch closely for possible fixes or fee changes.
   

3. Brothers plead guilty in death of Marrero father ambushed on his way home (nola.com) — A Jefferson Parish judge has sentenced two Terrytown brothers to 25 years in prison after they pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the 2023 shooting death of 20-year-old Jakari Edwards in Marrero. Investigators say the brothers ambushed Edwards on Mt. Kennedy Drive, shooting him multiple times, though authorities have never disclosed a motive. The plea deal reduced original second-degree murder charges.

Despite being outshot, the JBU men capitalized on key chances, while the women staged a dramatic second-half comeback capped by an 84th-minute winner. Local supporters saw ranked teams battle under pressure.
   

5. Louisiana public defenders struggle to cover expenses, audit report says (neworleanscitybusiness.com) — Jefferson Parish's public defender district overspent its budget by about $1 million last fiscal year, the largest deficit of any Louisiana district, according to a new audit. While reserves covered the gap, state officials warn that unstable local funding and declining conviction-fee revenue threaten the long-term strength of public defense services residents rely on.
