Social housing program gets city task force sign-off in Portland, Maine (smartcitiesdive.com) — Portland's Social Housing Task Force is urging the City Council to launch a new social housing program, including a revolving fund and two pilot projects under city ownership. The proposal would use public borrowing power and land to create permanently affordable, mixed-income rentals, potentially through a city-run development and added units within Portland Housing Authority or its development arm.

2. Police identify woman killed in hit-and-run crash in Portland (wabi.tv) — Portland police have identified 57-year-old resident Nichele Roakes as the woman fatally struck by a pickup while crossing Forest Avenue near Hannaford on Aug. 24. Investigators say the dark-colored truck fled toward downtown and are asking anyone with information or video from the area to contact them at 207-874-8575.

3. A classroom you have to SEA in Maine (wabi.tv) — A major new $15 million endowment will help keep Gulf of Maine Research Institute's Portland-based LabVenture program free for Maine students, including many visiting the city and ocean for the first time. The hands-on science experience at the Portland facility now has long-term support to keep bringing sixth graders from all 16 counties into real-world ocean and data science.

4. Holden teen missing for nearly a year (newscentermaine.com) — A missing Holden teen's cellphone last pinged in the Portland area before shutting off, and nearly a year later officials are still asking for the public's help. Authorities say 18-year-old Mary "Oli" Hembree hasn't contacted family since November and may still be in Maine or possibly Massachusetts. Anyone with information is urged to contact Holden police or NCMEC.
