📰 News we're reading

1. Sweetser Auction and Gala to raise money for Maine's first youth psychiatric residential facility (wmtw.com) — A major Sweetser fundraiser is coming to Brick South at Thompson's Point in Portland on Thursday, Sept. 17, aiming to raise $400,000 in one night. The gala will feature chef-crafted food, live music, and hundreds of auction items, with all proceeds supporting Maine's first youth psychiatric residential treatment facility planned for Sweetser's Saco campus.

2. Nearly a Hearts of Pine player, Taig Healy scores twice against Portland (pressherald.com) — Portland's USL League One club, the Hearts of Pine, fell 4-1 at home as New Hampshire native Taig Healy scored twice for Fort Wayne FC, highlighting a player Portland tried to sign. With the Hearts mired near the bottom of the table and winless in league play since early July, players are now effectively auditioning for 2027 roster spots.

3. Zooplankton tied to Maine lobster larva health declines as Gulf waters warm (wgme.com) — From Portland, researchers are warning that warming Gulf of Maine waters may be starving baby lobsters by pushing away a key zooplankton food source, calanus finmarchicus. A University of Maine study and work by Harpswell-based scientists link declining larvae survival to these tiny plankton, raising questions about future lobster harvests while offering new tools to better predict population changes.

4. Food lobby boosts GOP candidates for pro-industry reforms (washingtonexaminer.com) — Portland viewers will soon see new TV ads praising Sen. Susan Collins as part of a national food industry push for more business-friendly federal ingredient labeling rules. The seven-figure campaign by Americans for Ingredient Transparency aims to counter stricter Make America Healthy Again proposals, urging Mainers to call Collins about a single national standard that industry groups say would help keep grocery prices down.
