Anne Arundel Medical Center Furloughs An Estimated 1K Employees

Furloughed employees will be redeployed through its Resource Development Center who then will be assigned to areas needing support.

ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD — An estimated 1,000 employees of Anne Arundel Medical Center have been furloughed. Some of the remaining staff will focus on treating coronavirus patients. The hospital canceled elective surgeries in accordance with federal guidelines and subsequently decreased ambulatory service staff.

Hospital spokeswoman Arminta Plater told the Capital Gazette that furloughed employees will be redeployed through its Resource Development Center who then will be assigned to areas that align with operational needs. Furloughed employees will receive 80 hours of pay. Individuals who are enrolled and eligible for benefits will remain on their plans through June 30.

“Over the past several weeks, we have had to make difficult decisions regarding how we staff our health system to confront the challenges presented by the global pandemic. This has included staff furloughs,” said Plater. "We have trained and redeployed hundreds of staff to support the expected COVID-19 surges in the state of Maryland."

As of Sunday morning, Anne Arundel County has a total of 1,510 positive new coronavirus cases, according to the Anne Arundel County Department of Health, and 63 deaths. The state has 18,581 confirmed cases and 827 deaths, reports the Maryland Department of Health. More than 3,960 people have been hospitalized.
