Anne Arundel Co. Firefighter Recovering Following Heart Surgery

An Anne Arundel County firefighter who collapsed while getting ready to head out on a fire call is recovery from heart surgery.

PASADENA, MD — An Anne Arundel County firefighter who collapsed while putting on his gear in order to head out to battle a fire is recovering from surgery. A crew member found Captain Donald Kelley, 62, unconscious on the floor of an engine bay Sunday afternoon and began CPR, assisted by a volunteer firefighter.

Kelley was taken to Baltimore Washington Medical Center for treatment. Kelley serves as company commander of the Lake Shore Fire Station. Anne Arundel County Fire Chief Trisha Wolford told WJZ that Kelley underwent a three-hour surgery to unblock his arteries. All four of them were between 70 and 80 percent blocked. The surgery went well, Wolford said.
