Kayaker Treated For Hypothermia After Hour In Water

A kayaker fishing near Downs Park in Pasadena overturned and couldn't make it to shore because of high winds, authorities say.

PASADENA, MD — A kayaker fishing near Downs Park in Pasadena overturned and couldn't make it to shore because of high winds, authorities say. The man spent an hour before Anne Arundel County Fire crews were dispatched to rescue him by boat.

The department says they were called about 2:25 p.m. Wednesday and found the kayaker in the water about 250 feet from shore and 50 feet from the end of a fishing pier. Strong winds made it difficult for responders to reach him using a throw rope from the pier, but they were finally able to bring him in closer. A boat from Special Operations was able to remove the kayaker from the water.

The 57-year-old man said he was fishing when his kayak overturned. He estimated he was in the water for about an hour before he was noticed by people on shore. He was taken by paramedics to Baltimore Washington Medical Center for treatment of hypothermia, the fire department said.
