Life Changing Events Trigger a Personal Insurance Review

Should you be talking to your insurance agent?

Of course, there are a few obvious reasons you might have to speak to your insurance agent: you're moving, you bought a new car, etc., etc.

But there are other critical times when a short chat will help your agent protect you better. Here are 10 events off the top of my head that should trigger a call to your agent:

1. You’re getting married – bringing your policies in sync with your spouse and/or getting coverage together is very important.  Having two separate auto insurance policies can create costly gaps in insurance coverage.  Let your agent know as soon as you can, preferable talking to them prior to getting married.

2. Marital separation has profound effects on your car insurance coverage.
3. Divorce means lots to sort out... too complicated to o into detail in this short post, please give your agent a call.
4. Refinancing is a good time to review coverage and make sure it's in sync with what the lender requires and that the house values are updated.
5. Home remodel or improvement—you want to make sure you maintain true “replacement cost” especially if you’ve spent over $25,000.
6. You're giving a family member or relative one of your cars but keeping it in your name—you have to talk immediately to your agent!

7. You've purchased some jewelry, fine art, antiques, guns, a fur coat or an expensive collection— make sure you have it listed on your home insurance policy.
8. You got rid of some jewelry, fine art, antique, etc.—make sure you're not wasting premium on something you no longer own.
9. You bought an income rental property—make sure your homeowners policy gives you the right liability protection.
10. You don't have "flood" insurance but maybe you'd like to discuss it some more—You need to understand what flood insurance can do for you.

Is summary, if you go through a life changing event, please communicate with your insurance agent or carrier.  Your insurance protection plan is designed to protect you and your lifestyle, so if something changes, it is important to let your agent know to so they can make sure your plan changes accordingly.
