Summer is for swimming in the creeks. My grandchildren, dogs, and I headed for the cool water on a sultry day. My male cavalier, who loves the water as much as children do, never tires of the sport. The kids ran and jumped off the pier. I floated on a raft with my ruby cavalier and watched Harley, the male, swim circles around us.
Baby ducks with their Mama appeared under the pier. Harley spotted them and doggy paddled toward the ducks. I yelled, but to no avail. He chased the ducks into the middle of the creek. Mama duck led her babies further away and Harley to my amazement kept pace. Mama duck, sensing Harley, turned and started swimming back. She came close to shore and headed for our pier. I got off the raft, even though I did not know what I could do.
Mama duck knew. She separated herself from her ducklings. Harley followed her. Then she swam to me, right to me with Harley close behind. As she passed by my side, I stood still. When Harley attempted to pass, I grabbed him.
