GLEN BURNIE, MD — A Baltimore man died changing a flat tire Sunday in a hit-and-run crash on the shoulder of MD 295, according to Maryland State Police. Officials said the driver suspected of hitting him was found after a witness followed her and alerted authorities.

Stuart A. R. Johnson Jr., 41, of Baltimore, was pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash on MD 295 north of Route 100, police said. He was employed by a roadside assistance company that had been contacted after the commercial passenger bus got a flat tire, according to authorities.

When the crash occurred, officials said the bus was empty, as those aboard had been transferred to another vehicle and were on the way to their destination.

Brittany L. Walton, 23, of the 6400 block of Skipton Drive in Hanover, was taken into custody after her vehicle became disabled on MD 295 north near I-195, where she ran into nearby woods and was found, police said. The Maryland Transportation Authority Police, Anne Arundel County Police Department and Maryland State Police were part of the team that apprehended her, officials reported.

Walton — who was wanted in Baltimore City — was arrested after authorities learned of the warrants, police said, adding that charges in the fatal hit-and-run crash were pending Monday morning. She was charged with eight counts of animal cruelty from a case on July 15, 2018; and in an incident March 12, she was charged with fourth-degree store burglary and theft from $100 to under $1,500.

The Maryland State Police Crash Team is still investigating and will consult with the Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney’s Office regarding any charges, officials reported.
