Baltimore Ranked Among Top Foodie Hotspots

Baltimore is known for its crabs, but there's lots of good stuff to eat here, according to a ranking of the nation's "best foodie cities."

BALTIMORE, MD — Diners in Baltimore can find fresh seafood — especially Maryland blue crabs — in many restaurants. And the region also offers picturesque dining at waterfront spots. It's not surprising, then, that Charm City was named one of the nation's best foodie cities in a recent WalletHub ranking.

The personal finance website ranked 182 U.S. cities on 29 factors of "foodie-friendliness," from the cost of groceries to restaurant diversity.

Baltimore came in at No. 45 in the nation, but tied with Columbia for fourth from the bottom in the ratio of full-service restaurants to fast-food dining options. Columbia ranked No. 158 overall on the list, while nearby Washington, D.C., came in at No. 15.

Maryland eateries deemed treasures by the experts at Bon Appétit earlier this year included Peter's Inn: "My favorite restaurant in Baltimore is Peter's Inn: "Bohemian, foodie, glamorously understated, and weirdly elegant, even though it never tries to act 'rich' (which it actually is)," Baltimore native and independent filmmaker John Waters writes. "Pay no attention to the fact that part of the building just burned down. They will be opening up again real soon."

The coveted top spot went to Portland, Oregon. Voracious diners might as well stay away from Pearl City, Hawaii, which came in dead last in WalletHub's ranking.
