Phantasms is a group exhibition featuring Towson University MFA candidates who invoke the illusory nature of the senses to communicate their internal conflicts, fascinations, and anxieties. Across a wide range of media, they translate between materials and transmute the phenomenological into physical forms. These works question the notion of an objective truth by challenging our sensory perception.

When scientific discoveries are made, they replace older versions of reality. Like science, art helps society grope towards truth and comprehend the unknown. But unlike science, artistic discoveries do not usurp or disprove one another. Instead, they expose an infinite expanse of overlapping realities that confirm, contradict, and complicate each other to reveal new modes of being. The works featured in Phantasms are born in the conceptual gray areas left by artistic pursuit, exposing the fallibility of our senses and mirroring the complexities of our world.

Phantasms was organized by the Spring 2026 curatorial collaboration between the MFA Studio Art and MA Professional Practice in Art History programs at Towson University.

Join us in grappling with reality on Thursday, May 14th during the opening of Phantasms, located on the 5th floor of Maryland Art Place (218 West Saratoga St. in the BROMO Arts District). This exhibition is free and open to the public.
